FAQs

Answers to popular questions about Elleste Solo

What is Elleste Solo?

Elleste Solo is a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) product containing oestradiol (estradiol), a form of the natural female hormone oestrogen. It is available as tablets in 1 mg and 2 mg strengths. Elleste Solo provides oestrogen-only HRT and is used to relieve menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and mood changes in women who have had a hysterectomy. Women with an intact uterus must take a progestogen alongside Elleste Solo to protect the womb lining.

How does Elleste Solo work?

Elleste Solo replaces the oestrogen that the ovaries stop producing during and after the menopause. The declining oestrogen levels are responsible for menopausal symptoms. By supplementing oestradiol, Elleste Solo alleviates vasomotor symptoms (hot flushes, night sweats), urogenital symptoms (vaginal dryness, discomfort), mood disturbances, and helps maintain bone density, reducing the risk of osteoporotic fractures.

Who is Elleste Solo suitable for?

Elleste Solo (oestrogen-only HRT) is primarily intended for women who have had a hysterectomy, as they do not need the womb-protective effect of a progestogen. It is used for moderate to severe menopausal symptoms that significantly affect quality of life. Women with an intact uterus should use a combined HRT product (oestrogen plus progestogen) such as Elleste Duet, or add a separate progestogen to Elleste Solo.

How do I take Elleste Solo?

Take one Elleste Solo tablet daily, at the same time each day. Swallow the tablet whole with water. It can be taken with or without food. Treatment is continuous — take one tablet every day without a break. Your prescriber will start you on the lowest effective dose (usually 1 mg) and adjust if needed based on symptom control. Always use the lowest dose that controls your symptoms.

How long can I take Elleste Solo for?

The duration of HRT should be reviewed at least annually with your prescriber. clinical guidance states that there is no arbitrary limit on the duration of HRT — the decision to continue should be based on an individual assessment of benefits and risks. Many women take HRT for 5 years or longer. For women taking HRT primarily for bone protection, the benefits continue for as long as treatment is taken.

What are the side effects of Elleste Solo?

Common side effects include breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, bloating, and leg cramps. These often settle within the first 3 months. Breakthrough bleeding may occur, particularly when starting treatment or changing dose. Less common side effects include mood changes, skin reactions, and fluid retention. If breast tenderness is persistent, a dose reduction may help.

Does Elleste Solo increase the risk of breast cancer?

Oestrogen-only HRT (such as Elleste Solo, used after hysterectomy) is associated with little or no increase in breast cancer risk when used for up to 5 years. Beyond 5 years, any increase in risk is small. The Women’s Health Initiative study found no significant increase in breast cancer with oestrogen-only HRT over 7 years. Your prescriber will discuss the individual risk-benefit balance with you.

Does Elleste Solo increase the risk of blood clots?

Oral HRT, including Elleste Solo tablets, is associated with a small increase in the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). The risk is approximately 1.7 times higher than in non-users, but the absolute risk remains low. Transdermal HRT (patches or gels) does not increase VTE risk and may be preferred for women with VTE risk factors. Discuss your individual risk with your prescriber.

Can I take Elleste Solo if I still have my womb?

If you have not had a hysterectomy, you must take a progestogen alongside Elleste Solo to protect the womb lining from thickening (endometrial hyperplasia), which can lead to womb cancer. Your prescriber may add a separate progestogen (such as Utrogestan or Provera) for at least 12 days each month, or may recommend switching to a combined HRT product like Elleste Duet.

How can I get Elleste Solo?

You can request Elleste Solo through NowPatient by completing a short online consultation with one of our prescribing clinicians. Your clinician will review your menopausal symptoms, medical history and risk factors such as blood clots and breast cancer to decide whether Elleste Solo is the right HRT for you. If treatment is suitable, a prescription is issued and your medication is dispensed by our registered pharmacy and delivered to your door.
