What If I Have Medicare and Still Can’t Afford My Medications?
If you have Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage and none of the NowPatient savings programs are applicable or affordable, you still have several important options to explore for Medicare prescription drug savings:
Check Medicaid Eligibility in Your State
You can check whether you qualify for Medicaid in your state by visiting HealthCare.gov. The government site is straightforward to use; simply select your state, and it will direct you to the appropriate contact point to complete your application. State
Medicaid programs may cover the full cost of your prescription medications.
People who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid are known as “dual eligibles” and may receive comprehensive prescription drug coverage through both programs.
Apply for the Low Income Subsidy (Extra Help) Program
If you are denied Medicaid and still unable to afford your copay or co-insurance – for example, if you are in the Medicare coverage gap (also known as the Donut Hole) – you may be eligible for the federal Low Income Subsidy (LIS) program, also known as “Extra Help.”
To qualify for the Low Income Subsidy, you must be a resident of one of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia.
- Online: Check eligibility at the SSA Medicare Part D Extra Help page (ssa.gov/medicare/part-d-extra-help)
- By Phone: Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778)
What If I’m Uninsured or Underinsured and Can’t Afford My Prescription?
If you are uninsured or underinsured (for example, your medication is not covered by your health plan) and the NowPatient drug savings options are not applicable or affordable, there are additional steps you can take to get help paying for prescriptions:
Step 1: Check Medicaid Eligibility
Visit HealthCare.gov to check Medicaid eligibility in your state. Select your state and follow the instructions to apply. State Medicaid programs may cover the full cost of your medications.
Step 2: Contact the Pharmaceutical Manufacturer Directly
If you are denied Medicaid and all other options have been exhausted, and if your medication has been prescribed for an FDA-approved indication, you can contact the pharmaceutical company directly. Many manufacturers offer additional patient assistance programs, compassionate use programs, or emergency medication supply for patients who cannot afford their prescriptions.
What If I’m Commercially or Privately Insured and Still Can’t Afford My Medication?
If you have commercial or private health insurance and none of the NowPatient prescription savings programs are applicable or affordable, consider these options:
Appeal Your Insurance Company’s Coverage Decision
If your medication is not covered by your plan, you have the right to appeal your insurance company’s decision. A formal appeal can sometimes result in the drug being covered, particularly if your doctor can demonstrate the medication is medically necessary for your condition.
Check Medicaid Eligibility
If you cannot afford your copay, check Medicaid eligibility in your state at HealthCare.gov. However, having private insurance may complicate Medicaid eligibility, as existing coverage is considered during the financial assessment. If you qualify, state Medicaid may cover the full cost of your medication.
Copay Assistance Programs: Organizations That Can Help With Prescription Drug Costs
If you have already applied for Medicaid and received a denial, or if you have Medicare and were denied the Low Income Subsidy, the following nonprofit copay assistance organizations may be able to help cover your out-of-pocket prescription costs:
