What should you do if you use too much terazosin?
Call your doctor right away or seek immediate medical attention if your symptoms do not improve or they become worse after using terazosin. You can also call 800-222-1222 to reach the American Association of Poison Control Centers or use its online resource if you think you’ve used too much terazosin. But if you have severe symptoms, call 911 (or your local emergency number) immediately or go to the nearest emergency room.

Terazosin has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) and the symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)).
Mechanism of action
Terazosin belongs to the class of drugs known as alpha blockers. It is an antihypertensive that works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, which helps to improve urinary flow and reduce symptoms of BPH. Additionally, it also helps to lower blood pressure by blocking alpha-1 receptors in blood vessels, resulting in their relaxation and widening.
Warnings and precautions for terazosin
- Hypotension: Terazosin may cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, resulting in dizziness or fainting (orthostatic hypotension). Use caution when rising from a sitting or lying position
- Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome (IFIS): If you are planning to undergo cataract surgery, inform your eye surgeon about the use of terazosin, as it may increase the risk of complications during surgery
- Priapism: Terazosin has been associated with priapism, a prolonged and painful erection. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience an erection lasting longer than 4 hours
- Hepatic Impairment: Adjustments to the dosage may be necessary in individuals with liver disease
- Tell your doctor if you are allergic to terazosin, doxazosin, or prazosin before starting treatment
- It is not known if terazosin passes into breast milk. Speak to your doctor before breast-feeding

It is important to inform your healthcare provider about all the prescription drugs, over the counter nonprescription medications, herbal products, supplements, and vitamins you are taking to avoid potential adverse effects and drug interactions.
