SOMAVERT is the brand name for pegvisomant and is available as a subcutaneous injection.
What dosages is SOMAVERT available in?
SOMAVERT is available as a 10 mg, 15 mg, 20 mg, 25 mg or 30 mg subcutaneous injection.
What is SOMAVERT used for?
SOMAVERT is a growth hormone receptor antagonist that is used to treat acromegaly in people who either can’t get surgery or radiation, or for whom surgery or radiation didn’t work well.
How does SOMAVERT work?
SOMAVERT is a growth hormone receptor antagonist. It works by stopping growth hormone (GH) in your body from attaching to its receptors, which stops the hormone from working. This eases some symptoms of acromegaly, a condition that’s caused by having too much GH in the body.
How do I take SOMAVERT?
SOMAVERT is dosed as follows:
- Starting dose: The typical starting dose is 40 mg injected under the skin on day 1, then 10 mg injected once per day starting on day 2
- Maintenance dose: The typical maintenance dose ranges from 10 mg to 30 mg injected under the skin once per day. Your provider might change your dose depending on the levels of a hormone called IGF-1 in your body. The maximum dose is 30 mg once per day

SOMAVERT is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you.
SOMAVERT Common Side Effects
Common side effects of SOMAVERT:
- Common cold, upper respiratory infection, or ear infection
- Pain
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Liver problems
- Flu-like symptoms
- Injection site reactions
SOMAVERT Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with SOMAVERT. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Dangerously low blood sugar: feeling faint or dizzy; shaking; sweating; fast heartbeat; feeling nervousness, anxious, confused, irritable, or very hungry
- Liver problems: yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes, confusion, fatigue, low appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort
- Severe allergic reaction: difficulty breathing; rash; swelling in your face, tongue, or lips
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on SOMAVERT
The following medications may interact with SOMAVERT:
- Insulin and/or Oral hypoglycemic Agents: Patients with acromegaly and with diabetes mellitus may require careful monitoring and dose reductions of insulin and/or oral hypoglycemic agents
- Opioids: Patients on opioids may need higher SOMAVERT doses to achieve appropriate IGF-1 suppression
