Protonix is a PPI that is used to treat:
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Erosive esophagitis
- Other medical conditions that cause too much stomach acid (e.g., Zollinger-Ellison syndrome)
How does Protonix work?
Protonix is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It lowers the amount of acid in your stomach by blocking the final step of stomach acid production. This helps relieve heartburn and other stomach problems.
How do I take Protonix?
Protonix is typically taken as 20 mg to 40 mg by mouth once daily.
Is it safe for me to take Protonix?
Protonix is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have a hatients with known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation or to substituted benzimidazoles or are taking rilpivirine-containing products.
Protonix Common Side Effects
Common side effects of Protonix:
- Headache
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Belly pain
Protonix Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Protonix. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Severe stomach pain or diarrhea
- Kidney problems: urinating more or less than usual, fever, poor appetite
- Lupus symptoms: joint pain, skin rash on arms or cheeks that gets worse in the sunlight
- Serious skin reactions: blistering, peeling, or bleeding skin, fever, chills
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Protonix
The following medications may interact with Protonix:
- Atazanavir and nelfinavir: Protonix reduces plasma levels of atazanavir and nelfinavir. Concomitant use is not recommended
- Saquinavir: Protonix increases plasma levels of saquinavir. Monitor for toxicity and consider dose reduction of saquinavir
- May interfere with drugs for which gastric pH affects bioavailability (e.g., ketoconazole, iron salts, ampicillin esters, and digoxin).
- Patients treated with Protonix and digoxin may need to be monitored for increases in digoxin toxicity
- Co-administration of clopidogrel with 80 mg omeprazole may reduce the pharmacological activity of clopidogrel if given concomitantly or if given 12 hours apart
- Cilostazol: Protonix increases systemic exposure of cilostazol and one of its active metabolites. Consider dose reduction of cilostazol
- Drugs metabolized by cytochrome P450 (e.g., diazepam, warfarin, phenytoin, cyclosporine, disulfiram, benzodiazepines): PRILOSEC can prolong their elimination. Monitor and determine need for dose adjustments
- Patients treated with proton pump inhibitors and warfarin may need to be monitored for increases in INR and prothrombin time
- Combined inhibitor of CYP 2C19 and 3A4 (e.g. voriconazole) may raise omeprazole levels
- Tacrolimus: Protonix may increase serum levels of tacrolimus
- Methotrexate: Protonix may increase serum levels of methotrexate
