Nayzilam is the brand name for midazolam and is available as a nasal spray.
What dosages is Nayzilam available in?
Nayzilam is available as a single-dose nasal spray unit containing 5 mg midazolam per 0.1 mL solution.
What is Nayzilam used for?
Nayzilam is a benzodiazepine and is used to treat seizure attacks in people with epilepsy who are 12 years of age and older.
How does Nayzilam work?
Nayzilam is a benzodiazepine. It’s thought to slow down activity in your brain to help stop seizures.
How do I take Nayzilam?
Nayzilam is dosed as follows:
- Adults and children 12 years of age and older: Spray 1 dose (5 mg) into one nostril. After 10 minutes, if the seizure isn’t controlled, spray a second dose into the other nostril. Don’t use more than 2 doses of Nayzilam to treat a seizure attack
- It isn’t recommended to use Nayzilam more than once every 3 days or more than 5 times in a month. Talk to your provider if you or your child has a seizure attack more often than this because it means that your seizures aren’t well controlled. Your provider will need to adjust your daily seizure medications so that the attacks happen less often
Is it safe for me to take Nayzilam?
Nayzilam is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication in the following:
- Patients with hypersensitivity to midazolam
- Patients with acute narrow-angle glaucoma
Nayzilam Common Side Effects
Common side effects of Nayzilam:
- Drowsiness
- Nasal discomfort
- Headache
- Throat irritation
- Runny nose
Nayzilam Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Nayzilam. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Withdrawal: unusual involuntary movements, muscle pain and stiffness, shaky hands, stomach upset, anxiety, panic attacks, changes in mood or behavior, fast heart beat, more seizures
- Accidentally taking too much (overdose): trouble breathing, extreme sleepiness, difficulty thinking straight, confusion, weakness, bluish fingernails and lips, hard time walking or moving normally, coma

Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Nayzilam
The following medications may interact with Nayzilam:
- CYP3A4 Inhibitors: Avoid co-administration of Nayzilam with moderate or strong CYP3A4 inhibitors. Nayzilam should be used with caution when co-administered with mild CYP3A4 inhibitors
- Opioids: Risk of respiratory depression is increased.
- Other CNS Depressants: May increase the risks of hypoventilation, airway obstruction, desaturation, or apnea and may contribute to profound and/or prolonged drug effect

Is Nayzilam safe in pregnancy?
Taking Nayzilam late in pregnancy may cause your baby to have symptoms of sedation (breathing problems, sluggishness, low muscle tone), and/or withdrawal symptoms (jitteriness, irritability, restlessness, shaking, excessive crying, feeding problems). Tell your healthcare provider right away if you become pregnant or think you are pregnant during
treatment with Nayzilam. If you become pregnant while using Nayzilam, talk to your healthcare provider about registering with the North American Antiepileptic Drug (NAAED) Pregnancy Registry. You can register by
calling 1-888-233-2334. For more information about the registry, go to AED pregnancy registry The purpose of this registry is to collect information about the safety of antiepileptic drugs during pregnancy.
