MEDROL Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Warnings & Dosing
What is MEDROL?
MEDROL is the brand name for methylprednisolone and is available as an oral tablet.
What dosages is MEDROL available in?
MEDROL is available as a 4 mg, 8 mg, 16 mg, and 32 mg oral tablet.
What is MEDROL used for?
MEDROL is a corticosteroid that is used to treat the following:
- Conditions affecting certain hormones (e.g., low adrenal hormones)
- Joint conditions (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis)
- Lupus
- Skin conditions (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
- Allergic reactions
- Eye inflammation
- Lung problems
- Conditions related to blood cells
- Cancer of blood cells (e.g., leukemia)
- Gut conditions (e.g., ulcerative colitis)
- Multiple sclerosis
How does MEDROL work?
MEDROL is a corticosteroid. It’s a lab-made medication that’s similar to cortisol, a natural stress hormone your body makes. Methylprednisolone (Medrol) works by calming down your body’s immune response, which can help get rid of certain medical problems that are caused by a sensitive immune system. In addition, methylprednisolone (Medrol) lowers the amount of inflammatory chemicals that cause pain, redness, itching, and swelling.
How do I take MEDROL?
In general, the dose of MEDROL depends on the condition that you’re taking the medication for and how serious it is. Your provider will raise or lower your dose based on how you respond to this medication and if you have any side effects.
The typical starting dose of MEDROL can range from 4 mg to 48 mg by mouth per day.
Is it safe for me to take MEDROL?
MEDROL is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have a systemic fungal infection or a known hypersensitivity to MEDROL.
MEDROL Common Side Effects
Common side effects of MEDROL:
- Swelling
- Muscle weakness
- Stomach pain
- Bloating
- Increased appetite
- Trouble sleeping
- Weight gain
- Dizziness
MEDROL Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with MEDROL. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Withdrawal symptoms: Long-term fatigue, muscle weakness, poor appetite, weight loss, belly pain
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on MEDROL
The following medications may interact with MEDROL:
- Mutual inhibition of metabolism occurs with concurrent use of cyclosporin and MEDROL; therefore, it is possible that adverse events associated with the individual use of either drug may be more likely to occur
- MEDROL may increase the clearance of chronic high dose aspirin. This could lead to decreased salicylate serum levels or increase the risk of salicylate toxicity when methylprednisolone is withdrawn. Aspirin should be used cautiously in conjunction with corticosteroids in patients suffering from hypoprothrombinemia
- The effect of MEDROL on oral anticoagulants is variable. There are reports of enhanced as well as diminished effects of anticoagulant when given concurrently with corticosteroids. Therefore, coagulation should be monitored to maintain the desired anticoagulant effect
Who makes MEDROL?
Pfizer
Is MEDROL safe in pregnancy?
It is not known if MEDROL will harm your unborn baby. Animal studies, however, suggest that excessive use of steroids can cause harm to unborn babies. You should talk to your healthcare provider before taking this medication if you are pregnant.
