LOPID is a fibrate that is used as an add-on to diet for the treatment of high triglycerides and to lower the risk of heart disease in people with low HDL, high LDL, and high triglycerides who’ve tried other options (e.g., exercise, other medications).
How does LOPID work?
LOPID is a fibrate. It works by helping to break down fats in your body. It also lowers the production of certain fats in your liver. This leads to the lowering of triglycerides (fats) and “bad” cholesterol (LDL) while raising “good” cholesterol (HDL) in the body.
How do I take LOPID?
LOPID is typically given as 600 mg by mouth twice daily, 30 minutes before breakfast and dinner.
Is it safe for me to take LOPID?
LOPID is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have hepatic or severe renal dysfunction, including primary biliary cirrhosis, preexisting gallbladder disease, a hypersensitivity to gemfibrozil or are taking simvastatin, repaglinide, dasabuvir, or selexipag.

Serious side effects are rare with LOPID.
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on LOPID
The following medications may interact with LOPID:
- Warfarin – May result in a prolonged PT/INR time
- Immunosuppressants such as cyclosporine and tacrolimus – Can cause nephrotoxicity
- Bile acid binding resins: take LOPID at least 1 hour before or 4 to 6 hours after a bile acid binding resin to avoid impeding its absorption
- Colchcine: Cases of myopathy, including rhabdomyolysis, have been reported with fenofibrates are taken with colchicine
- CYP2C8 Substrates: LOPID is a strong inhibitor of CYP2C8 and may increase exposure of drugs mainly metabolized by CYP2C8 (e.g., dabrafenib, enzalutamide, loperamide, montelukast, paclitaxel, pioglitazone, rosiglitazone)
- HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors
- The concomitant administration of LOPID with simvastatin, repaglinide, dasabuvir, or selexipag is contraindicated
