On Friday, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommended temporary restriction of Lemtrada’s use as the agency reviews reports that the drug compromises patients’ immune systems and potentially leads to fatal side effects in the heart and blood vessels.

Mavenclad is taken orally at home over just two weeks each year. These two annual 4-5 day treatment courses offer the benefit of two years of efficacy. On the other hand, Ocrevus involves intravenous infusion and requires visits to a medical facility every six months, with ongoing infusions to maintain its efficacy.

For primary-progressive MS , ocrelizumab (Ocrevus) is the only FDA-approved disease-modifying therapy (DMT). Those who receive this treatment are slightly less likely to progress than those who are untreated.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for MS at this time, and an imminent cure is unlikely, says Tyler Smith, M.D., a neurologist and clinical assistant professor at NYU Langone Health in New York City.

WEDNESDAY, Sept. 27, 2023 (HealthDay News) — A new study is strengthening the evidence that stem cell transplants can be highly effective for some people with multiple sclerosis — sending the disease into remission for years, and sometimes reversing disability.

Ponesimod (Ponvory) was approved by the FDA in 2021 and is taken once a day with a gradually increasing dosing schedule. This medicine has a low relapse rate and has demonstrated fewer brain lesions than some other medicines used to treat multiple sclerosis.

Lemtrada (alemtuzumab), which is used to treat relapsing remitting MS, is a chemotherapy drug. Other drugs that have been used to treat MS include azathioprine, cyclophosphamide, methotrexate and mitoxantrone.

Hair loss appears to be a very rare side effect of Alemtuzumab (Lemtrada). One known case of alopecia universalis has been reported. Hair loss is not a reported side effect of Dimethyl-fumarate (Tecfidera, BG-12) however there appears to be some anecdotal occurrences.

MS itself is rarely fatal, but complications may arise from severe MS, such as chest or bladder infections, or swallowing difficulties. The average life expectancy for people with MS is around 5 to 10 years lower than average, and this gap appears to be getting smaller all the time.

An emerging therapy for MS is chemotherapy combined with an autologous bone marrow transplant . Combining chemotherapy with a bone marrow transplant allows doctors to administer a higher dose of chemotherapy — typically cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan) — than they otherwise would be able to.

Lemtrada is approved by the FDA for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis, to include relapsing remitting disease and active secondary progressive disease, in adults.

At year 2, 85% of patients who took LEMTRADA had stabilized or improved disability vs 75% of people who took Rebif. At year 6, 77% of patients who took LEMTRADA had stabilized or improved disability. 1-point or greater decrease in EDSS score. Change in EDSS score of 0.5 points or less.

Overall, the newest results demonstrated that Lemtrada slowed disease progression over five years in relapsing-remitting MS patients who failed to respond to previous therapy.

The cost for Lemtrada intravenous solution (10 mg/mL) is around $30,334 for a supply of 1.2 milliliters, depending on the pharmacy you visit. Quoted prices are for cash-paying customers and are not valid with insurance plans.

Lemtrada is a highly effective (category 2.0) DMD; in clinical trials people taking Lemtrada had about 50% fewer relapses than people taking Rebif. In clinical trials, people taking Lemtrada had fewer, smaller or no new areas of active MS (lesions).

But in MS these cells attack the covering around the nerves (called myelin) in your brain and spinal cord. Alemtuzumab stops these cells from getting into your brain and spinal cord before they can damage the nerves there. Most people only need to take the drug twice, in two courses spaced a year apart from each other.

Hair loss is an infrequent side effect of fingolimod (Gilenya). This means it occurs in between 1 in 100 and 1 in 1000 people. Hair loss appears to be a very rare side effect of Alemtuzumab (Lemtrada). One known case of alopecia universalis has been reported.

A: After IV administration, the elimination half-life of Lemtrada is approximately 2 weeks. Anti-Lemtrada binding antibodies develop in most patients (83%, 3 months after the 2nd cycle). Neutralizing antibodies also are common, detectable in 88-94% of binding antibody-positive patients 1-3 months after the 2nd cycle.

Clinical trials indicate that Ocrevus slightly outperforms Mavenclad in terms of annualized relapse rate reduction compared to an active comparator—47% for Mavenclad versus 58% for Ocrevus. Both medications reduced confirmed disability progression by around 40% when compared to placebo or active comparator.

Serious infusion reactions may happen while you receive, or up to 24 hours or longer after you receive LEMTRADA. You will receive your infusion at a healthcare facility with equipment and staff trained to manage infusion reactions, including serious allergic reactions, and urgent heart or breathing problems.

Monoclonal antibody, CD52 (recombinant, humanized).

On November 14, 2014, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved alemtuzumab (Lemtrada; Genzyme), a CD52-directed cytolytic monoclonal antibody, for the treatment of relapsing forms of MS.

For RMS patients, Kesimpta can be a very effective option with the convenience of self-administered monthly injections. It may be preferred over Ocrevus for those wanting to avoid infusions or with high Ocrevus copays. Frequent monitoring is not required.
