Lantus is a long-acting insulin that is used to treat:

How does Lantus work?
Lantus is an insulin. Insulin is a natural hormone your body normally makes to lower glucose (sugar) levels in the blood. It helps your body absorb and store sugar from your bloodstream after eating a meal. It also stops your liver from making glucose.
How do I take Lantus?
Your healthcare provider will work with you to determine your dose of Lantus. The dose of Lantus will be different for each person. It depends on different factors, such as whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes and how well your body responds to insulin.
- Type 1 diabetes: Your healthcare provider will help you calculate your total daily insulin (TDI) requirement. The typical starting dose is about 30% of your TDI requirement, injected under the skin once daily
- Type 2 diabetes: Your healthcare provider will help you calculate your dose based on your body weight. The typical starting dose is 0.2 units/kg (up to 10 units) injected under the skin once daily
Is it safe for me to take Lantus?
Lantus is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have symptoms of low blood sugar.

Common side effects of Lantus:
- Cough, sore throat, and other symptoms of an upper respiratory tract infection
- Tremors, dizziness, and other symptoms of severely low blood sugar

- High blood pressure
- Other infection

Lantus Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Lantus. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Severely low blood sugar: feeling shaky, being nervous or anxious, fast heartbeat, sweating or body chills, confusion, feeling sleepy, weakness or low energy, excessive hunger
- Severely low potassium levels: weakness, muscle cramps or twitches, constipation, irregular heartbeat
- Severe allergic reaction: rash, hives, swelling of face, tongue, and throat, difficulty breathing
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Lantus
The following medications may interact with Lantus:
- Drugs that affect glucose metabolism: Adjustment of insulin dosage may be needed; closely monitor of blood glucose
- Antiadrenergic Drugs (e.g., beta-blockers, clonidine, guanethidine, and reserpine): Signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia may be reduced or absent
