Kalbitor is a plasma kallikrein inhibitor and is used to treat sudden attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE) in adults and children age 12 years and older.
How does Kalbitor work?
Kalbitor is a plasma kallikrein inhibitor, which means it blocks a protein in the body called plasma kallikrein. People with hereditary angioedema (HAE) have very active plasma kallikreins. These proteins trigger the release of another chemical responsible for pain and swelling. Kalbitor treats HAE by blocking plasma kallikrein activity and preventing the proteins from triggering an attack.
How do I take Kalbitor?
Kalbitor is given as 30 mg (3 mL), administered subcutaneously in three 10 mg (1 mL) injections. If an attack persists, an additional dose of 30 mg may be administered within a 24 hour period.

Because of this risk, you can only get this medication from a trained healthcare provider at a medical clinic or hospital that can give you medical care if needed. Your provider’ll ask you to stay to be monitored after your injection. They’ll provide help right away if you experience symptoms such as chest discomfort, flushing (blushing), swelling in your throat, itchy skin, runny nose, stuffy nose, throat irritation, hives, wheezing, and or trouble breathing.
