What is ecallantide used for?
ecallantide is a plasma kallikrein inhibitor and is used to treat sudden attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE) in adults and children age 12 years and older.
How does ecallantide work?
ecallantide is a plasma kallikrein inhibitor, which means it blocks a protein in the body called plasma kallikrein. People with hereditary angioedema (HAE) have very active plasma kallikreins. These proteins trigger the release of another chemical responsible for pain and swelling. ecallantide treats HAE by blocking plasma kallikrein activity and preventing the proteins from triggering an attack.
How do I take ecallantide?
ecallantide is given as 30 mg (3 mL), administered subcutaneously in three 10 mg (1 mL) injections. If an attack persists, an additional dose of 30 mg may be administered within a 24 hour period.

ecallantide Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with ecallantide. It can cause a serious allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. This generally happens within the first hour of injection. Because of this risk, you can only get this medication from a trained healthcare provider at a medical clinic or hospital that can give you medical care if needed. Your provider’ll ask you to stay to be monitored after your injection. They’ll provide help right away if you experience symptoms such as chest discomfort, flushing (blushing), swelling in your throat, itchy skin, runny nose, stuffy nose, throat irritation, hives, wheezing, and or trouble breathing.
