JAYDESS Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Warnings & Dosing
What is JAYDESS?
JAYDESS is the brand name for a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system.
What dosages is JAYDESS available in?
JAYDESS is available as an intrauterine delivery system that contains 13.5 mg levonorgestrel.
What is JAYDESS used for?
JAYDESS is a progestin and is used to prevent pregnancy for up to 3 years.
How does JAYDESS work?
JAYDESS is a small device placed in the uterus that slowly releases a progestin hormone called levonorgestrel. This hormone prevents pregnancy by stopping your ovaries from releasing an egg. Levonorgestrel also makes it difficult for sperm to reach the egg and for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterus.
How do I take JAYDESS?
JAYDESS will need to be placed inside the uterus by your provider at their office. Once placed, it can prevent pregnancy for 3 years.
Is it safe for me to take JAYDESS?
JAYDESS is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication in the following.
- Pregnancy or suspicion of pregnancy. Cannot be used for post-coital contraception (emergency contraception).
- Congenital or acquired uterine anomaly if it distorts the uterine cavity.
- Acute pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or a history of PID unless there has been a subsequent intrauterine pregnancy
- Postpartum endometritis or infected abortion in the past 3 months
- Known or suspected uterine or cervical malignancy.
- Known or suspected breast cancer or other progestin-sensitive cancer
- Uterine bleeding of unknown etiology
- Untreated acute cervicitis or vaginitis or other lower genital tract infections
- Acute liver disease or liver tumor (benign or malignant).
Increased susceptibility to pelvic infection - A previous intrauterine device (IUD) that has not been removed
- Hypersensitivity to any component of JAYDESS
JAYDESS Common Side Effects
Common side effects of JAYDESS:
- Vaginal inflammation or irritation
- Ovarian cyst
- Acne
- Stomach cramps
- Headaches
- Breast discomfort or pain
- Changes in menstrual bleeding
JAYDESS Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with JAYDESS. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Ectopic pregnancy: severe, unexplainable pelvic pain along with unusual vaginal bleeding
- Severe infection: fever, chills, confusion, fatigue
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on JAYDESS
The following medications may interact with JAYDESS:
- Substances increasing the clearance of levonorgestrel, e.g.: Phenytoin, barbiturates, primidone, carbamazepine, rifampicin, and possibly also oxcarbazepine, topiramate, felbamate griseofulvin and products containing the St. John’s wort
- Substances with variable effects on the clearance of levonorgestrel: When co-administered with sex hormones, many HIV/HCV protease inhibitors and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors can increase or decrease plasma concentrations of the progestin
- Substances decreasing the clearance of levonorgestrel (enzyme inhibitors), e.g.: Strong and moderate CYP3A4 inhibitors such as azole antifungals (e.g. fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, voriconazole) verapamil, macrolides (e.g. clarithromycin, erythromycin), diltiazem and grapefruit juice can increase plasma concentrations of the progestin
Who makes JAYDESS?
Bayer Healthcare
Is JAYDESS safe in pregnancy?
Remove JAYDESS if pregnancy occurs with JAYDESS in place. If pregnancy occurs, there is increased risk of ectopic pregnancy including loss of fertility, pregnancy loss, septic abortion (including septicemia, shock and death), and premature labor and delivery.
