What is FLAGYL?
FLAGYL is the brand name for metronidazole and is available as an oral capsule and tablet.
What dosages is FLAGYL available in?
FLAGYL is available as a 375 mg oral capsule and a 250 mg and 500 mg oral tablet.
What is FLAGYL used for?
FLAGYL is a nitroimidazole antibiotic that is used to treat many different infections caused by certain bacteria and parasites, including sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) (such as trichomoniasis), infections caused by parasites of the intestines (amebiasis), skin infections, heart infections, and brain infections.
How does FLAGYL work?
FLAGYL is a nitroimidazole antibiotic that affects the DNA of bacteria or parasites causing the infection. This leads to death of the bacteria, which stops their growth.
How do I take FLAGYL?
FLAGYL will be dosed depending on the type of infection you have. The most important thing is that you take it exactly as prescribed and finish the full course of antibiotics even if you’re feeling better.
Is it safe for me to take FLAGYL?
FLAGYL is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have a prior history of hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives and in patients with trichomoniasis, FLAGYL Tablets is contraindicated during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on FLAGYL
The following medications may interact with FLAGYL:
- Disulfiram- – Psychotic reactions have been reported in alcoholic patients who are using FLAGYL and disulfiram concurrently. FLAGYL should not be given to patients who have taken disulfiram within the last two weeks
- Alcoholic Beverages – Abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and flushing may occur if alcoholic beverages or products containing propylene glycol are consumed during or following FLAGYL
- Warfarin and other Oral Anticoagulants – FLAGYL has been reported to potentiate the anticoagulant effect of warfarin and other oral coumarin anticoagulants, resulting in a prolongation of prothrombin time. When FLAGYL is prescribed for patients on this type of anticoagulant therapy, prothrombin time and INR should be carefully monitored
- Lithium – In patients stabilized on relatively high doses of lithium, short-term FLAGYL therapy has been associated with elevation of serum lithium and, in a few cases, signs of lithium toxicity. Serum lithium and serum creatinine levels should be obtained several days after beginning FLAGYL to detect any increase that may precede clinical symptoms of lithium intoxication
- Busulfan – FLAGYL has been reported to increase plasma concentrations of busulfan, which can result in an increased risk for serious busulfan toxicity. Metronidazole should not be administered concomitantly with busulfan unless the benefit outweighs the risk.
- Drugs that Inhibit CYP450 Enzymes – The simultaneous administration of drugs that decrease microsomal liver enzyme activity, such as cimetidine, may prolong the half-life and decrease plasma clearance of FLAGYL
- Drugs that Induce CYP450 Enzymes – The simultaneous administration of drugs that induce microsomal liver enzymes, such as phenytoin or phenobarbital, may accelerate the elimination of FLAGYL, resulting in reduced plasma levels; impaired clearance of phenytoin has also been reported
- Drugs that Prolong the QT interval – QT prolongation has been reported, particularly when FLAGYL was administered with drugs with the potential for prolonging the QT interval
Who makes FLAGYL?
