What is DUAVEE used for?

DUAVEE is an estrogen replacement / SERM and is used for the following:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats during menopause
  • Prevention of osteoporosis in women who have gone through menopause
How does DUAVEE work?

How does DUAVEE work?

DUAVEE is a combination of two medications that help boost estrogen effects in the body. Conjugated estrogens is a mixture of estrogens that replace the natural hormone your body loses during menopause. This loss of estrogen during menopause causes hot flashes and night sweats. Bazedoxifene is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). It has opposite effects depending on where it works in the body. In bone, bazedoxifene acts like estrogen to prevent bone breakdown and improve bone mineral density (BMD), which is a measure of how dense and strong your bones are. This helps lower your risk of bone fractures. In the uterus, bazedoxifene stops estrogen from causing overgrowth of the uterus lining, which helps lower the risk of uterine cancer. By working together, conjugated estrogens and bazedoxifene help to relieve menopause symptoms and prevent osteoporosis while lowering the risk of uterine cancer.

  • Known or suspected estrogen-dependent neoplasia

Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on DUAVEE

Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on DUAVEE

The following medications may interact with DUAVEE:

  • Cytochrome P450 (CYP): Inducers of CYP3A4, such as St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) preparations, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, and rifampin, may reduce plasma concentrations of some estrogens, possibly resulting in a decrease in therapeutic effects and/or changes in the uterine bleeding profile
  • Uridine Diphosphate Glucuronosyltransferase (UGT): The metabolism of bazedoxifene may be increased by concomitant use of substances known to induce UGTs, such as rifampin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, and phenytoin. A reduction in bazedoxifene exposure may be associated with an increase risk of endometrial hyperplasia. Adequate diagnostic measures, including directed or random endometrial sampling when indicated, should be undertaken to rule out malignancy in postmenopausal women with undiagnosed persistent or recurring abnormal genital bleeding
  • Atorvastatin: Concomitant administration of bazedoxifene (40 mg daily) and atorvastatin (20 mg, single-dose) to healthy postmenopausal women did not affect the pharmacokinetics of bazedoxifene, atorvastatin or its active metabolites
