MEDICAL INFORMATION

Duavee Key Facts

What is Duavee?

Duavee is the brand name for conjugated estrogens/bazedoxifene and is available as an oral tablet.

What dosages is Duavee available in?

Duavee is available as an oral tablet containing conjugated estrogens 0.45 mg and bazedoxifene 20 mg.

What is Duavee used for?

Duavee is an estrogen replacement / SERM and is used for the following:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats during menopause
  • Prevention of osteoporosis in women who have gone through menopause

How does Duavee work?

Duavee is a combination of two medications that help boost estrogen effects in the body. Conjugated estrogens is a mixture of estrogens that replace the natural hormone your body loses during menopause. This loss of estrogen during menopause causes hot flashes and night sweats. Bazedoxifene is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). It has opposite effects depending on where it works in the body. In bone, bazedoxifene acts like estrogen to prevent bone breakdown and improve bone mineral density (BMD), which is a measure of how dense and strong your bones are. This helps lower your risk of bone fractures. In the uterus, bazedoxifene stops estrogen from causing overgrowth of the uterus lining, which helps lower the risk of uterine cancer. By working together, conjugated estrogens and bazedoxifene help to relieve menopause symptoms and prevent osteoporosis while lowering the risk of uterine cancer.

How do I take Duavee?

Duavee is typically dosed as 1 tablet by mouth once daily. Each tablet contains 0.45 mg of conjugated estrogens and 20 mg of bazedoxifene.

Is it safe for me to take Duavee?

Duavee is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication in the following:

  • Undiagnosed abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Known, suspected, or past history of breast cancer
  • Known or suspected estrogen-dependent neoplasia
  • Active or past history of venous thromboembolism
  • Active or past history of arterial thromboembolism
  • Hypersensitivity (angioedema, anaphylaxis) to estrogens, bazedoxifene, or any ingredients
  • Known hepatic impairment or disease
  • Known protein C, protein S, or antithrombin deficiency or other known thrombophilic disorders
  • Pregnancy

Duavee Common Side Effects

Common side effects of Duavee:

  • Muscle spasms or twitching
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Heartburn
  • Upper stomach pain
  • Throat pain
  • Dizziness
  • Neck pain

Duavee Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects are rare with Duavee. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.

  • Blood clots: leg pain or swelling, skin that’s warm to the touch, trouble breathing
  • Stroke: sudden weakness on one side of your body, headache, changes in your speech or vision, confusion
    Unusual vaginal bleeding

Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Duavee

The following medications may interact with Duavee:

  • Cytochrome P450 (CYP): Inducers of CYP3A4, such as St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) preparations, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, and rifampin, may reduce plasma concentrations of some estrogens, possibly resulting in a decrease in therapeutic effects and/or changes in the uterine bleeding profile
  • Uridine Diphosphate Glucuronosyltransferase (UGT): The metabolism of bazedoxifene may be increased by concomitant use of substances known to induce UGTs, such as rifampin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, and phenytoin. A reduction in bazedoxifene exposure may be associated with an increase risk of endometrial hyperplasia. Adequate diagnostic measures, including directed or random endometrial sampling when indicated, should be undertaken to rule out malignancy in postmenopausal women with undiagnosed persistent or recurring abnormal genital bleeding
  • Atorvastatin: Concomitant administration of bazedoxifene (40 mg daily) and atorvastatin (20 mg, single-dose) to healthy postmenopausal women did not affect the pharmacokinetics of bazedoxifene, atorvastatin or its active metabolites

Who makes Duavee?

Pfizer

Is Duavee safe in pregnancy?

Duavee is contraindicated for use in pregnant women and is not indicated for use in females of reproductive potential. If you think you may be pregnant, you should have a pregnancy test and know the results. Do not take Duavee if the test is positive and talk to your healthcare provider.

  • NowPatient is worth your time!

I do not leave reviews, due to time and a rare condition I have. I initially left a message, my call was returned within 2 hours or less. NowPatient offers 4 discount programs. I worked with Jay, he was genuine and wanted to help me all while giving me amazing customer service. Even though I didn't qualify, he gave me some suggestions and tips while encouraging me to follow up with the manufacturer along with other things I could do. This is the real deal, not a scam, and not a waste of your time. Amazing!! Thank you, Jay!

  • Excellent service

Cannot speak highly enough of the service and assistance I have received from NowPatient. I was dealing with a very kind and helpful clinician who couldn't do enough to assist. He was knowledgeable about the medication being prescribed and the consultation was thorough. There were some hurdles to overcome to receive the medication overseas and nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommend.
