How does DDAVP work?
DDAVP is a synthetic vasopressin analog, which means it’s a man-made form of a natural hormone in your body called vasopressin. It works in your kidneys to balance fluids in your body and stop you from making too much urine. It also raises the number of proteins in your blood to stop you from bleeding so easily.
How do I take DDAVP?
DDAVP is typically taken as 0.05 mg twice daily. Your physician will adjust your dose as needed. The typical dose ranges from 0.1 mg to 0.8 mg daily total, split into 2 to 3 smaller doses, and taken throughout the day.
Is it safe for me to take DDAVP?
DDAVP is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have moderate to severe renal impairment (defined as a creatinine clearance below 50 mL/min) or a history of hyponatremia.

Common side effects of DDAVP include:
- Headache

DDAVP Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with DDAVP. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Low sodium levels in your blood (hyponatremia): headache, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, weight gain, muscle weakness, cramps, or spasms, loss of appetite, seizures
- Serious allergic reactions: trouble breathing, swelling in your face, lips, tongue, or throat, hives
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on DDAVP
The following medications may interact with DDAVP:
- Tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, chlorpromazine, opiate analgesics, NSAIDs, lamotrigine and carbamazepine – May increase the risk of water intoxication with hyponatremia
