COMBIGAN Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Warnings & Dosing
What is COMBIGAN?
COMBIGAN is the brand name for brimonidine/timolol and is available as an ophthalmic solution.
What dosages is COMBIGAN available in?
COMBIGAN is available as an ophthalmic solution that contains 0.2% brimonidine and 0.5% timolol.
What is COMBIGAN used for?
- COMBIGAN is an alpha agonist / beta blocker and is used to treat high pressure in the eye caused by glaucoma or ocular hypertension (high pressure inside the eye)
How does COMBIGAN work?
COMBIGAN is a combination of two medications. Brimonidine is an alpha agonist. It works to lower the production of fluids within the eye and help the flow of fluids out of the eye. Timolol is a beta blocker. It blocks beta receptors in the eye to lower eye pressure by lowering the amount of fluid in the eye.
How do I take COMBIGAN?
- COMBIGAN is typically dosed at 1 drop into the affected eye(s) twice a day (about 12 hours apart)
Is it safe for me to take COMBIGAN?
COMBIGAN is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have any of the following:
- Bronchial asthma, a history of bronchial asthma, severe chronic obstructive, pulmonary disease
- Sinus bradycardia, atrioventricular block, overt cardiac failure, cardiogenic shock

Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on COMBIGAN
The following medications may interact with COMBIGAN:
- Antihypertensives/cardiac glycosides may lower blood pressure
- Concomitant use with systemic beta-blockers may potentiate systemic beta-blockade
- Oral or intravenous calcium antagonists may cause atrioventricular conduction disturbances, left ventricular failure, and hypotension
- Catecholamine-depleting drugs may have additive effects and produce hypotension and/or marked bradycardia
- Use with CNS depressants may result in an additive or potentiating effect
- Digitalis and calcium antagonists may have additive effects in prolonging atrioventricular conduction time
- CYP2D6 inhibitors may potentiate systemic beta-blockade
- Tricyclic antidepressants may potentially blunt the hypotensive effect of systemic clonidine

Who makes COMBIGAN?
Allergan
Is COMBIGAN safe in pregnancy?
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women; however, in animal studies, brimonidine
crossed the placenta and entered into the fetal circulation to a limited extent. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, COMBIGAN should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit to the mother justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
