What is Cathflo Activase used for?
Cathflo Activase is a tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) indicated for the restoration of function to central venous access devices as assessed by the ability to withdraw blood.
How does Cathflo Activase work?
Cathflo Activase binds to the fibrin-plasminogen complex in a blood clot and converts the inactive plasminogen into active plasmin which digests the fibrin. ACTIVASE can dissolve a clot in either the coronary or pulmonary artery, restoring the blood supply to the area beyond the blockage.
How do I take Cathflo Activase?
Cathflo Activase is typically dosed as follows:
- Patients weighing ≥30 kg: 2 mg in 2 mL
- Patients weighing < 30 kg: 110% of the internal lumen volume of the catheter, not to exceed 2 mg in 2 mL
- If catheter function is not restored at 120 minutes after 1 dose of Cathflo Activase, a second dose may be instilled

- Recent intracranial or intraspinal surgery or serious head trauma
- Intracranial conditions that may increase the risk of bleeding
- Bleeding diathesis
- Current severe uncontrolled hypertension
- Current intracranial hemorrhage
- History of recent stroke

The following medications may interact with Cathflo Activase:
- Anticoagulants and drugs that inhibit platelet function increase the risk of bleeding when administered with ACTIVASE therapy
- Concomitant angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors may increase the risk of orolingual angioedema
