Is it safe for me to take ACTOS?
ACTOS is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. ACTOS Common Side Effects
Common side effects of ACTOS include:
- Respiratory infection (like a common cold)
- Headache
- Sinus infection
- Muscle pain
- Pain or irritation of the throat
ACTOS Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with ACTOS. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Worsening heart failure (shortness of breath, unusual swelling and tiredness, and sudden weight gain)
- Diabetic eye disease with swelling (also called macular edema)
- Bladder cancer (pain while you urinate, constant need to urinate, and blood in your urine)
- Liver problems (nausea or vomiting, stomach pain, unusual tiredness, loss of appetite, dark urine, yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes)
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on ACTOS
The following medications may interact with ACTOS:
- Strong CYP2C8 inhibitors such as gemfibrozil increase the levels and effects of pioglitazone
- Topiramate and rifampin may decrease pioglitazone levels and effects.
- Alcohol
- Insulin secretagogues or insulin use may increase the risk for hypoglycemia
