Unithroid is L-thyroxine (T4) indicated in pediatric and adult patients for:
- Hypothyroidism: As replacement in primary (thyroidal), secondary (pituitary), and tertiary (hypothalamic) congenital or acquired hypothyroidism (1)
- Pituitary Thyrotropin (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone, TSH) Suppression: As an adjunct to surgery and radioiodine therapy in the management of thyrotropin-dependent well-differentiated thyroid cancer
How does Unithroid work?
Unithroid is a man-made version of the T4 thyroid hormone made by your thyroid gland. Thyroid hormones have important functions like controlling metabolism, body temperature, heart rate, and more. When the amount of hormone is too low, taking thyroid replacement hormones can bring your levels back to normal.
How do I take Unithroid?
The starting dose of Unithroid depends on a variety of factors, including age, body weight, cardiovascular status, concomitant medical conditions (including pregnancy), concomitant medications, co-administered food, and the specific nature of the condition being treated. Peak therapeutic effect may not be attained for 4 to 6 weeks. It is typically taken once daily, on an empty stomach, one-half to one hour before breakfast with a full glass of water.

Experience with levothyroxine use in pregnant women, including data from post-marketing studies, have not reported increased rates of major birth defects or miscarriages. Unithroid should not be discontinued during pregnancy and hypothyroidism diagnosed during pregnancy should be promptly treated.
