What is UNITHROID used for?
UNITHROID is L-thyroxine (T4) indicated in pediatric and adult patients for:
- Hypothyroidism: As replacement in primary (thyroidal), secondary (pituitary), and tertiary (hypothalamic) congenital or acquired hypothyroidism (1)
- Pituitary Thyrotropin (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone, TSH) Suppression: As an adjunct to surgery and radioiodine therapy in the management of thyrotropin-dependent well-differentiated thyroid cancer
How does UNITHROID work?
UNITHROID is a man-made version of the T4 thyroid hormone made by your thyroid gland. Thyroid hormones have important functions like controlling metabolism, body temperature, heart rate, and more. How do I take UNITHROID?
The starting dose of UNITHROID depends on a variety of factors, including age, body weight, cardiovascular status, concomitant medical conditions (including pregnancy), concomitant medications, co-administered food, and the specific nature of the condition being treated. Peak therapeutic effect may not be attained for 4 to 6 weeks. It is typically taken once daily, on an empty stomach, one-half to one hour before breakfast with a full glass of water.
Is it safe for me to take UNITHROID?
UNITHROID is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have uncorrected adrenal insufficiency.
