Retacrit is the brand name for epoetin alfa-epbx and is available as an injection for subcutaneous or IV use.

Retacrit is available as a 2,000 Units/mL, 3,000 Units/mL, 4,000 Units/mL, 10,000 Units/mL, and 40,000 Units/mL single-dose vial or a 20,000 Units/2 mL (10,000 Units/mL) and 20,000 Units/mL multiple-dose vial.
What is Retacrit used for?
Retacrit is an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) that is used for the:
- Treatment of anemia due to chemotherapy, chronic kidney disease, and zidovudine use in HIV-infected patients
- Reduction of allogeneic red blood cell transfusions in patients having elective, noncardiac, nonvascular surgery
How does Retacrit work?
Retacrit is an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA). It works similarly to a naturally-occurring hormone in our body (erythropoietin). Erythropoietin sends a signal to our body to make more red blood cells.
How do I take Retacrit?
The dose of Retacrit will be calculated based on your condition and weight. It can be given every day, 3 times a week, or once a week.
Is it safe for me to take Retacrit?
Retacrit is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication in the following:
- Uncontrolled hypertension
- Pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) that begins after treatment with Retacrit or other erythropoietin protein drugs.
- Serious allergic reactions to Retacrit or other epoetin alfa products
- Use of the multiple-dose vials containing benzyl alcohol in neonates, infants, pregnant women, and lactating women

Common side effects of Retacrit:
- High blood pressure
- Joint pain
- Fever
- Dizziness
- Blood clot at dialysis port
- Upper respiratory tract infection
Retacrit Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Retacrit. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Blood clot (redness, swelling, pain usually in one leg)
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Retacrit
There are no major drug interactions listed for Retacrit. However, always let your physician and pharmacist know about any other medications or supplements (including prescribed and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and dietary or herbal supplements) that you are currently taking.

Is Retacrit safe in pregnancy?
It is not known if Retacrit may harm your unborn baby. Talk to your healthcare provider about possible pregnancy and birth control choices that are right for you. Do not use Retacrit from multiple-dose vials in newborns, infants, pregnant or breastfeeding women because the Retacrit in these vials contains benzyl alcohol. Benzyl alcohol has been shown to cause brain damage, other serious side effects, and death in newborn and premature babies. If you use Retacrit from multiple-dose vials you should not breastfeed for at least 2 weeks after the last dose.
