PRILOSEC is the brand name for omeprazole and is available as an oral capsule and tablet.
What dosages is PRILOSEC available in?
PRILOSEC is available as an oral 10 mg, 20 mg, and 40 mg oral capsule and a 20 mg oral tablet (OTC).
What is PRILOSEC used for?
PRILOSEC is a proton pump inhibitor that is used for the following:
- Heartburn — OTC only
- Stomach or duodenal ulcer
- Lower the risk of duodenal ulcer caused by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection
- Other medical conditions that cause too much stomach acid (e.g., Zollinger-Ellison syndrome)
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Inflamed esophagus due to GERD
How does PRILOSEC work?
PRILOSEC is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It blocks acid from getting “pumped” into the stomach. This helps relieve heartburn and other medical conditions that cause too much stomach acid.
How do I take PRILOSEC?
PRILOSEC is typically taken as 20 mg or 40 mg by mouth once daily.
Is it safe for me to take PRILOSEC?
PRILOSEC is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have a known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation or substituted benzimidazoles (angioedema and anaphylaxis have occurred)
PRILOSEC Common Side Effects
Common side effects of PRILOSEC:
- Headache
- Belly pain
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Passing gas
PRILOSEC Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with PRILOSEC. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Severe stomach pain or diarrhea
- Kidney problems: urinating more or less than usual, fever, poor appetite, blood in urine
- Lupus symptoms: joint pain, skin rash on arms or cheeks that gets worse in the sunlight
- Serious allergic reaction: blistering, peeling, or bleeding skin; fever; chills; trouble breathing; face swelling
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on PRILOSEC
The following medications may interact with PRILOSEC:
- Atazanavir and nelfinavir: PRILOSEC reduces plasma levels of atazanavir and nelfinavir. Concomitant use is not recommended
- Saquinavir: PRILOSEC increases plasma levels of saquinavir. Monitor for toxicity and consider dose reduction of saquinavir
- May interfere with drugs for which gastric pH affects bioavailability (e.g., ketoconazole, iron salts, ampicillin esters, and digoxin)
- Patients treated with PRILOSEC and digoxin may need to be monitored for increases in digoxin toxicity
- Co-administration of clopidogrel with 80 mg omeprazole may reduce the pharmacological activity of clopidogrel if given concomitantly or if given 12 hours apart
- Cilostazol: PRILOSEC increases systemic exposure of cilostazol and one of its active metabolites. Consider dose reduction of cilostazol
- Drugs metabolized by cytochrome P450 (e.g., diazepam, warfarin, phenytoin, cyclosporine, disulfiram, benzodiazepines): PRILOSEC can prolong their elimination. Monitor and determine need for dose adjustments
- Patients treated with proton pump inhibitors and warfarin may need to be monitored for increases in INR and prothrombin time
- Combined inhibitor of CYP 2C19 and 3A4 (e.g. voriconazole) may raise omeprazole levels
- Tacrolimus: PRILOSEC may increase serum levels of tacrolimus
- Methotrexate: PRILOSEC may increase serum levels of methotrexate
