Permethrin is a pyrethroid antiparasitic and is used to treat scabies (prescription version – 5% cream), and head lice (over-the-counter version – 1% shampoo rinse/lotion).
How does Permethrin work?
Permethrin is a topical antiparasitic known as a pyrethroid. It kills lice and scabies by causing damage to their nerves and muscles. This paralyzes them and causes them to die. Keep in mind that it doesn’t kill lice eggs (nits).
How do I take Permethrin?
Permethrin is typically dosed as follows. Massage enough cream into the skin to cover the body from the hairline on your head to the bottoms of your feet (typically about 30 grams for adults). Infants will also need treatment on their scalp and temple. Leave the cream on for 8 to 14 hours and then wash off in the shower.
Is it safe for me to take Permethrin?
Permethrin is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects.
