MAXZIDE Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Warnings & Dosing
What is MAXZIDE?
MAXZIDE is the brand name for triamterene/hydrochlorothiazide and is available as an oral tablet.
What dosages is MAXZIDE available in?
MAXZIDE contains triamterene/hydrochlorothiazide and is available as a 37.5 mg/25 mg or 75 mg/50 mg oral capsule.
What is MAXZIDE used for?
MAXZIDE is a combination diuretic (water pill) and is used to treat high blood pressure, and swelling.
How does MAXZIDE work?
MAXZIDE is a combination medication. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic (water pill) that makes you urinate more. It works in your kidneys to remove extra water and certain electrolytes (like sodium and potassium), which helps lower your blood pressure and lessen swelling throughout your body. Triamterene is a potassium-sparing diuretic (water pill). It also works in your kidneys to remove extra water and electrolytes, but it doesn’t remove potassium from your body. This helps lower your blood pressure and swelling while preventing your blood potassium levels from dropping low.
How do I take MAXZIDE?
MAXZIDE is typically taken by mouth once daily around the same time each day,
Is it safe for me to take MAXZIDE?
MAXZIDE is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you are receiving other potassium-sparing agents such as spironolactone, amiloride, or other formulations containing triamterene or if you have anuria, acute and chronic renal insufficiency or significant renal impairment.
MAXZIDE Common Side Effects

Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on MAXZIDE
The following medications may interact with MAXZIDE:
- Angiotensin-converting Enzyme Inhibitors – Potassium-sparing agents should be used with caution in conjunction with angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors due to an increased risk of hyperkalemia
- Oral Hypoglycemic Drugs – Concurrent use with chlorpropamide may increase the risk of severe hyponatremia
- Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs – A possible interaction resulting in acute renal failure has been reported in a few patients on DYAZIDE when treated with indomethacin, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agent. Caution is advised in administering nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents with DYAZIDE
- Lithium – Lithium generally should not be given with diuretics because they reduce its renal clearance and increase the risk of lithium toxicity
