Lotrel is the brand name for amlodipine/benazepril and is available as an oral capsule.

Lotrel is available as an oral capsule that contains amlodipine/benazepril in strengths of 5 mg/10 mg, 5 mg/20 mg, 10 mg/20 mg and 10 mg/40 mg.

Lotrel is an ACE inhibitor/calcium channel blocker that is used to treat high blood pressure.

Lotrel is a combination of two medications that work together to lower blood pressure. Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker (CCB). It works by relaxing your blood vessels to lower your blood pressure. Benazepril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It relaxes your blood vessels by blocking the ACE protein that typically squeezes your blood vessels.

Lotrel is typically started at a dose of 2.5 mg/10 mg (amlodipine/benazepril) by mouth once daily. Your provider will adjust your dose based on how well it’s helping your blood pressure and if you’re having side effects. The maximum dose is Lotrel 10 mg/40 mg (amlodipine/benazepril) once daily.

Lotrel is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have angioedema or history of hereditary or idiopathic angioedema, are currently taking aliskiren, or within 36 hours of switching to or from a neprilysin inhibitor, e.g., sacubitril/valsartan.

Common side effects of Lotrel:

• Headache
• Dizziness
• Cough
• Rash
• Swelling

Serious side effects are rare with Lotrel. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.

• Angioedema (severe swelling): swelling of the face, arms or legs, lips, tongue, or throat
• Heart attack: tightness and pain in the chest, neck, arms, or back; cold and clammy skin; sweating; dizziness; tiredness
• Serious kidney problems: urinating less often than usual, swelling in your feet, ankles, or hands, unexplained weight gain
• High blood potassium levels: nausea, muscle weakness, tingling sensation, abnormal heartbeat
• Dangerously low blood pressure: dizziness, lightheadedness, pale skin, feeling faint or fainting
• Severe liver problems: swelling of your stomach, yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes, confusion, dark or brown urine

The following medications may interact with Lotrel:

• Diuretics: Excessive drop in blood pressure
• Antidiabetics: Increased risk of hypoglycaemia
• NSAIDS: Increased risk of renal impairment and loss of antihypertensive efficacy
• Dual inhibition of the renin-angiotensin system: Increased risk of renal impairment, hypotension and hyperkalemia
• Lithium: Symptoms of lithium toxicity
