How does HALDOL work?
HALDOL is a typical antipsychotic. It works by blocking the activity of dopamine, a chemical involved with mood and movement, in your brain. This leads to lower dopamine levels, which causes less hallucinations (seeing things that aren’t there) and delusions (beliefs in things that aren’t true).
How do I take HALDOL?
HALDOL is typically dosed up to 3 times daily. Your dose will be deteremined based on your age, severity of illness, previous response to other antipsychotic drugs, and any concomitant medication or disease state. Children, debilitated or geriatric patients, as well as those with a history of adverse reactions to antipsychotic drugs, may require less HALDOL.
Is it safe for me to take HALDOL?
HALDOL is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have severe toxic central nervous system depression or comatose states from any cause and in individuals who are hypersensitive to this drug or have Parkinson’s disease.
HALDOL Common Side Effects
Common side effects of HALDOL include:
- Stiff or rigid muscles, tremors, trouble speaking, and other parkinsonism symptoms
- Spasms in muscles of the eye
- Loss of muscle control
- Restlessness
- Stomach pain
- Headache
HALDOL Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with HALDOL. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Abnormal heart rhythm: chest pounding, short of breath, chest pain, feeling faint or lightheaded
- Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS): fever, sweating, stiff muscles, confusion, not aware of your surroundings, fast or irregular heartbeat
- Serious infection: fever, pale skin, fast heart rate, lightheadedness, feeling unwell
- Stroke: sudden numbness in your face, arms, or legs (especially on one side of your body), or if you have sudden trouble speaking, seeing, walking, or understanding people
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on HALDOL
The following medications may interact with HALDOL:
- Medications known to prolong the QTc interval – Examples include disopyramide, quinidine,procainamide, amiodarone, dofetilide, dronedarone, ibutilide, sotalol, citalopram, escitalopram, erythromycin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, and pentamidine
- CYP3A4 and CYP2D6 inhibitors – Alprazolam; itraconazole, ketoconazole, and some other azoles, nefazodone, certain antivirals, chlorpromazine; promethazine; quinidine; paroxetine, sertraline
- venlafaxine, and some other antidepressants – May increase HALDOL levels and effects
- Inducers of CYP3A4 – May gradually decrease the levels and effects of HALDOL. Examples include carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifampicin, and St John’s Wort

It is not known if HALDOL will harm your unborn baby. You should talk to your healthcare provider before taking this medication if you are pregnant.
