What is EXELON?
EXELON is the brand name for rivastigmine and is available as an oral capsule and solution as well as a topical patch.
What dosages is EXELON available in?
EXELON is available as a 1.5 mg, 3 mg, 4.5 mg, or 6 mg oral tablet, a 2 mg/mL oral solution, and 4.6 mg/24 hours, 9.5 mg/24 hours, and 13.3 mg/24 hours topical patch.
What is EXELON used for?
EXELON is an acetylcholinesterase Inhibitor and is used to treat dementia related to alzheimer’s disease (AD), and dementia related to Parkinson’s disease (PD).
How does EXELON work?
EXELON is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Researchers don’t know exactly how it helps treat dementia, but it prevents the breakdown of a chemical in your body called acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is important in transmitting signals through nerves.
How do I take EXELON?
EXELON capsules and solution are typically taken by mouth with a starting dose is 1.5 mg by mouth twice a day. The maximum daily dose is 6 mg twice a day. EXELON patches are dosed as one 4.6 mg patch applied to the skin once a day, every 24 hours. If needed, the strength of the patch can be raised every 4 weeks, until a maximum dose of 13.3 mg every 24 hours.
Is it safe for me to take EXELON?
EXELON is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have a known hypersensitivity to rivastigmine, other carbamate derivatives or other components of the formulation or a history of application site reaction with rivastigmine transdermal patch suggestive of allergic contact dermatitis, in the absence of negative allergy testing.

Common side effects of EXELON include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Dizziness
- Diarrhea
- Headache
- Loss of appetite (anorexia)
- Stomach pain
EXELON Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with EXELON. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Seizures

The following medications may interact with EXELON:
- Concomitant use with metoclopramide, beta-blockers, or cholinomimetic and anticholinergic drugs is not recommended
