DUONEB is a SAMA/SABA and is used to treat shortness of breath in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who need more than one bronchodilator.

DUONEB is a combination of two medications that work together to make it easier to breathe. Ipratropium is a short-acting muscarinic antagonist (SAMA), a type of anticholinergic medication. It works by blocking a chemical called acetylcholine from squeezing (tightening) the airways in your lungs. Albuterol is a short-acting beta-agonist (SABA). It works by relaxing the muscles in your lungs to open up your airways.

DUONEB is typically given as 1 vial inhaled through the mouth by nebulization 4 times per day, and up to 2 additional doses (for a total maximum of 6 doses per day) if needed for wheezing or shortness of breath.

DUONEB is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have a history of hypersensitivity to any of its
components, or to atropine and its derivatives.

  • Serious allergic reaction: hives, swelling of your face, lips, or tongue, difficulty breathing
  • Sudden narrowing of your airways: difficulty breathing, wheezing, chest pain or tightness, cough
  • Heart problems: dizziness, fatigue, weakness, tremor, irregular heartbeat, worsening symptoms of heart problem you already have

Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on DUONEB

The following medications may interact with DUONEB:

  • Anticholinergic agents – Potential for an additive interaction with concomitantly used anticholinergic medications
  • beta-adrenergic agents – Caution is advised in the co-administration of DUONEB and other sympathomimetic agents due to the increased risk of adverse cardiovascular effects
  • beta-receptor blocking agents – May decrease the effects of albuterol
  • Non-potassium sparing diuretics (such as loop or thiazide diuretics) – May cause electrocardiogram (ECG) changes and/or hypokalemia
  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants – DUONEB should be administered with extreme caution to patients being treated with monoamine oxidase inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants, or within 2 weeks of discontinuation of such agents because the action of albuterol sulfate on the cardiovascular system may be potentiated
