Demadex is a diuretic (water pill) and is used to treat swelling due to heart failure or kidney disease and swelling due to liver disease (taken with other medications) and high blood pressure.

How does Demadex work?

Demadex is a loop diuretic (water pill) that makes you urinate more. It works in the kidneys to get rid of extra water and electrolytes (like sodium and potassium), which helps ease swelling and lower blood pressure.

How do I take Demadex?

Demadex is typically taken by mouth once daily. The typical starting dose is 10 mg to 20 mg by mouth once daily. Your physician will adjust your dose depending on your response to the medication. The maximum dose is up to 200 mg by mouth once daily, depending on the condition.

Is it safe for me to take Demadex?

Demadex is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. Demadex Serious Side Effects

  • Severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance: Dry mouth, extreme thirst, weakness, low energy, drowsiness, muscle pain or cramps, fast heart beat, nausea, vomiting, not making urine
  • Low blood pressure: Dizziness, fainting, weak or rapid pulse
  • Serious skin reaction: Painful blisters, peeling skin, rash

Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Demadex

The following medications may interact with Demadex:

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) – Reduced diuretic, natriuretic, and antihypertensive effects; risk of renal impairment
  • CYP2C9 – Concomitant use with CYP2C9 inhibitors can decrease torsemide clearance. Torsemide may affect the efficacy and safety of
  • sensitive CYP2C9 substrates or of substrates with a narrow therapeutic range, such as warfarin or phenytoin
  • Cholestyramine – Decreased exposure of Demadex
  • Organic anion drugs – may decrease diuretic activity of Demadex
  • Lithium – Risk of lithium toxicity
  • Renin-angiotensin inhibitors – Increased risk of hypotension and renal impairment
  • Radiocontrast agents – Increased risk of renal toxicity
  • Corticosteroids and ACTH – Increased risk of hypokalemia
