COSOPT is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor / Beta blocker used for high pressure inside the eye (ocular hypertension) and Open-angle glaucoma (the most common type of glaucoma)
How does COSOPT work?
COSOPT is a combination of dorzolamide, a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, and timolol, a beta blocker. Both of these medications lower your eye pressure by lowering the amount of fluid in the eye.
How do I take COSOPT?
COSOPT is typically given as 1 drop in the affected eye(s) two times daily.
Is it safe for me to take COSOPT?
COSOPT is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have bronchial asthma or a history of bronchial asthma, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, sinus bradycardia, second or third degree atrioventricular block, overt cardiac failure, or cardiogenic shock.
COSOPT Common Side Effects
Common side effects of COSOPT include:
- Bitter, sour, or unusual taste after use
- Eye burning or stinging
- Red eye
- Blurry vision
- Itchy eyes
- Bacterial eye infection due to bottle contamination
- Feeling like there’s something in your eye
- Cloudy vision
- Eyelid pain or discomfort
- Swollen eyelid
- Cornea inflammation
COSOPT Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with COSOPT. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Breathing problems: trouble breathing, wheezing
- Heart problems: shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat (heart palpitations), chest pain, swelling of your ankles or feet, sudden weight gain
- Severe allergic reaction: swelling of your face, lips, mouth, or tongue; severe itching; rash; trouble breathing; dizziness
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on COSOPT
The following medications may interact with COSOPT:
- Potential additive effect of oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitor with COSOPT
- Concomitant use with systemic beta-blockers may potentiate systemic beta-blockade
- Oral or intravenous calcium antagonists may cause atrioventricular conduction disturbances, left ventricular failure, and hypotension
- Catecholamine-depleting drugs may have additive effects and produce hypotension and/or marked bradycardia
- Digitalis and calcium antagonists may have additive effects in prolonging atrioventricular conduction time
- CYP2D6 inhibitors may potentiate systemic beta-blockade
