Augmentin is a combination antibiotic that can treat different types of bacterial infections in both children and adults, including ear infections, sinus infections, lower respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infection, and urinary tract infections (UTIs).
How does Augmentin work?
Augmentin contains amoxicillin, which is a type of penicillin antibiotic that kills bacteria by preventing them from being able to make cell walls to protect themselves. It also contains clavulanate, which is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. A beta-lactamase is a type of protein that bacteria make to try and break down amoxicillin and cause it to not work. By preventing beta-lactamase from working, clavulanate protects amoxicillin from being broken down and helps it work better at fighting infections.
