ADALAT is the brand name for nifedipine oral tablets.
What dosages is ADALAT available in?
ADALAT is available as a 10 mg and 20 mg oral tablet. It is also available as an extended-release tablet.
What is ADALAT used for?
ADALAT is a calcium channel blocker (CCB) and is used for the following:
- Chest pain (angina)
- High blood pressure (hypertension) – extended-release tablets only
How does ADALAT work?
ADALAT is a calcium channel blocker (CCB). It mainly works by relaxing your blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure and gets more oxygen to your heart to help with chest pain.
How do I take ADALAT?
ADALAT is dosed as follows:
- The usual adult dose is 20 mg twice daily. If required, the dose may be increased up to 40 mg twice daily. The maximum daily dose of 80 mg should not be exceeded. The recommended dose interval is about 12 hours
- The usual maintenance dose for the extended-releas tablets is 30 mg to 60 mg once daily
Is it safe for me to take ADALAT?
ADALAT is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication in the following.
- Concomitant administration with strong P450 inducers, such as rifampin, are contraindicated since the
efficacy of nifedipine tablets could be significantly reduced - Nifedipine must not be used in cases of cardiogenic shock
ADALAT Common Side Effects
Common side effects of ADALAT:
- Swelling (edema) in the legs, feet, or hands
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Flushing
- Headache
- Weakness
- Nausea
- Swelling
ADALAT Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with ADALAT. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Low blood pressure or dizziness
- Heart attack: worsening or crushing chest pain, radiating jaw pain, racing heartbeat
- Heart failure: abnormal weight gain, difficulty breathing especially when you lie down
- Stomach or intestine (gut) injury: stomach pain or bloating, difficulty passing stool or gas
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on ADALAT
The following medications may interact with ADALAT:
- Strong CYP3A inducers such as rifampin, rifabutin, phenobarbital, phenytoin, carbamazepine, and St.
- John’s Wort reduce the bioavailability and efficacy of nifedipine; therefore nifedipine should not be used in
- combination with strong CYP3A inducers such as rifampin.
