What is MAXALT?
MAXALT is the brand name for rizatriptan and is available as an oral tablet and orally disintegrating tablet.
What dosages is MAXALT available in?
MAXALT is available as a 5 mg and 10 mg oral/orally disintegrating tablet.
What is MAXALT used for?
MAXALT is a triptan that is used in the treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura in people ages 6 years and older.
How does MAXALT work?
MAXALT is a triptan. It works to relieve migraines by attaching to and turning on serotonin receptors in the blood vessels and nerves in your brain. This causes the blood vessels to tighten and lowers the release of proteins that cause inflammation and pain.
How do I take MAXALT?
MAXALT is typically given as 5 mg to 10 mg by mouth once when you have a migraine. If your migraine doesn’t go away, you can take another dose at least 2 hours later. The maximum dose is 30 mg in a 24-hour period for adults. Your child’s provider will determine the dose based on your child’s body weight. The maximum dose is 5 mg to 10 mg depending on their weight.
Is it safe for me to take MAXALT?
MAXALT is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have a history of ischemic heart disease or coronary artery vasospasm, history of stroke or transient ischemic attack, peripheral vascular disease, ischemic bowel disease, uncontrolled hypertension, recent (within 24 hours) use of another 5-HT1 agonist (e.g., another triptan), or of an ergotamine-containing medication, hemiplegic or basilar migraine, or have used an MAOI within the past 14 days.
MAXALT Common Side Effects
Common side effects of MAXALT:
- Dizziness
- Sleepiness
- Tiredness
- Nausea
- Pain or pressure in your chest or throat
- Dry mouth
- Tingling or prickling feeling
MAXALT Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with MAXALT. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Heart problems: heart attack, dangerously high blood pressure, severe headache, chest pain, trouble breathing, irregular heartbeat
- Stroke: sudden weakness on one side of your body, headache, changes in your speech or vision, confusion
- Serotonin syndrome: fast heart rate, dizziness, sweating, flushing, tremor (shakiness), muscle stiffness or twitching, uncoordinated movement, hallucinations
- Narrowing of blood vessels in the body: bloody diarrhea; severe stomach pain; partial or permanent blindness; tightness, weakness, numbness of legs or feet; vision problems
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on MAXALT
The following medications may interact with MAXALT:
- Ergot-Containing Drugs: Ergot-containing drugs have been reported to cause prolonged vasospastic reactions. Because these effects may be additive, use of ergotamine-containing or ergot-type medications (like dihydroergotamine or methysergide) and MAXALT tablets within 24 hours of each other is contraindicated
- Monoamine Oxidase-A Inhibitors: MAO-A inhibitors increase systemic exposure by 7-fold. Therefore, the use of MAXALT tablets in patients receiving MAO-A inhibitors is contraindicated.
- Other 5-HT1 Agonists: Because their vasospastic effects may be additive, coadministration of MAXALT tablets and other 5-HT1 agonists (e.g., triptans) within 24 hours of each other is contraindicated.
- Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors/Serotonin Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors: Cases of serotonin syndrome have been reported during coadministration of triptans and SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, and MAO inhibitors
- Propranolol The dose of MAXALT should be adjusted in propranolol-treated patients, as propranolol can increase the levels and effects of MAXALT
