FAQs

Answers to popular questions about Lizinna

What is Lizinna?

Lizinna is a brand name for desogestrel 75 microgram tablets, a progestogen-only contraceptive pill (POP or ‘mini-pill’). It is bioequivalent to Cerazette, Hana, and Lovima — all containing the same active ingredient at the same dose. Lizinna is a prescription-only medicine in the UK and provides effective contraception by inhibiting ovulation in the majority of cycles and thickening cervical mucus. It has a 12-hour dosing window, unlike older POPs which only allow 3 hours.

How do I take Lizinna?

Take one Lizinna tablet at the same time every day without a break, including during your period. Swallow with water. If taken correctly, you have a 12-hour window if you are late taking a tablet (compared to only 3 hours with older POPs like Noriday or Norgeston). Start on day 1 of your period for immediate protection, or on any other day with additional contraception (condoms) for the first 2 days. Take continuously through each strip with no break between packs.

What are the side effects of Lizinna?

Common side effects include irregular bleeding (the most common reason for discontinuation — some women have no periods, some have frequent spotting), headache, mood changes, breast tenderness, nausea, acne, and decreased libido. Bleeding patterns usually settle after the first 3–6 months. Desogestrel POPs do not contain oestrogen and do not increase the risk of blood clots (VTE), making them suitable for women with cardiovascular risk factors, smokers over 35, or those who cannot take oestrogen.

How can I get Lizinna?

Lizinna requires a prescription from your GP, sexual health clinic, or online prescriber such as NowPatient. It is available on the NHS. Note that other desogestrel 75 mcg POPs (Hana, Lovima) are available over the counter from pharmacies without prescription. Your prescriber or pharmacist can advise on the most convenient option.
