FAQs
Answers to popular questions about Vibramycin
What is Vibramycin?
Vibramycin is a brand name for doxycycline, a tetracycline-class antibiotic manufactured by Pfizer. It is available as capsules and a dispersible tablet formulation (Vibramycin-D). Vibramycin is used to treat a broad range of bacterial infections including acne vulgaris, rosacea, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted infections (such as chlamydia), Lyme disease, and for malaria prophylaxis. It is a prescription-only medicine in the UK.
What is the difference between Vibramycin and generic doxycycline?
Vibramycin and generic doxycycline contain the same active ingredient and are bioequivalent. Generic doxycycline capsules or tablets are much more commonly dispensed in the UK and are significantly cheaper. The Vibramycin-D dispersible tablet may be useful for patients who have difficulty swallowing capsules, as it can be dissolved in water. Otherwise, there is no clinical advantage to branded Vibramycin.
How do I take Vibramycin?
Swallow capsules whole with a full glass of water while sitting or standing upright. Take with or after food to reduce stomach irritation. Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking the dose to prevent oesophageal irritation. Vibramycin-D dispersible tablets can be dissolved in water before swallowing. Avoid taking doxycycline with dairy products, antacids, or iron supplements as they reduce absorption — separate by at least 2 hours.
What are the side effects of Vibramycin?
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, and photosensitivity (increased sensitivity to sunlight — use SPF 30+ sunscreen and avoid prolonged sun exposure). Oesophageal irritation and ulceration can occur if tablets are not taken with enough water or if lying down too soon after taking the dose. Thrush (oral or vaginal candidiasis) may develop during treatment. Uncommon side effects include headache, visual disturbances, and skin rash. Doxycycline should not be taken during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or in children under 12 due to effects on teeth and bone development.
How can I get Vibramycin?
Vibramycin or generic doxycycline requires a prescription. It can be obtained from your GP, sexual health clinic, travel clinic (for malaria prophylaxis), or through online services like NowPatient. Generic doxycycline is the usual choice and is available on the NHS. NowPatient offers discreet online consultations and home delivery.
