FAQs
Answers to Popular Questions About Atovaquone/Proguanil
What is Atovaquone/Proguanil?
Atovaquone/proguanil is an antimalarial combination tablet used to prevent and treat malaria. It is the generic equivalent of Malarone and contains atovaquone 250 mg and proguanil hydrochloride 100 mg per tablet. It is effective against Plasmodium falciparum (the most dangerous malaria species) and is the most commonly prescribed antimalarial for travellers in the UK.
How does Atovaquone/Proguanil differ from Malarone?
Generic atovaquone/proguanil is bioequivalent to branded Malarone — same active ingredients, same doses, same effectiveness and safety. The only difference is the manufacturer and cost. Generic atovaquone/proguanil is significantly cheaper, making it a more affordable option for malaria prevention. Both are equally recommended by UK travel health guidelines.
How do I take Atovaquone/Proguanil for malaria prevention?
Take one tablet daily with food or a milky drink, starting 1–2 days before entering the malaria zone, continuing daily throughout your stay, and for 7 days after leaving. Always take with food, as this significantly improves absorption. The short lead-in (1–2 days) and tail (7 days) make it more convenient than mefloquine or doxycycline.
Can children take Atovaquone/Proguanil?
Yes, paediatric doses are available. Children weighing 11–20 kg take a paediatric tablet daily; those 21–30 kg take 2 paediatric tablets; those 31–40 kg take 3 paediatric tablets; and children over 40 kg take one adult tablet. Alternatively, junior Malarone paediatric tablets (62.5 mg/25 mg) are available.
What are the side effects of Atovaquone/Proguanil?
Common side effects include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and mouth ulcers. These are usually mild. Atovaquone/proguanil is generally the best-tolerated antimalarial, with fewer neuropsychiatric side effects than mefloquine and no photosensitivity (unlike doxycycline). Rare side effects include rash, raised liver enzymes, and blood disorders.
How can I get Atovaquone/Proguanil?
Atovaquone/proguanil is a prescription-only medicine available from your GP, travel health clinic, or NowPatient’s online service. It is not available on the NHS for malaria prevention — it must be obtained on a private prescription. NowPatient offers competitive pricing, online consultations, and home delivery.
