About Gedarel 30/150

Gedarel 30/150 is a combined hormonal contraceptive used to provide protection against pregnancy. It contains desogestrel, a progesterone and ethinylestradiol, an oestrogen as its active ingredients.

Gedarel 30/150 works by stopping the release of an egg each month from the ovaries, preventing ovulation during the menstrual cycle. It also causes cervical mucus to thicken, making it more difficult for sperm to pass through the cervix, and makes the lining of the womb thinner, so fertilised eggs are less likely to implant in the uterus wall.

NowPatient offers the Gedarel 30/150 birth control pill for the prevention of pregnancy only, following an online consultation with a prescribing clinician.

FAQs

Answers to Popular Questions About Gedarel 30/150

What is Gedarel 30/150?

Gedarel 30/150 is a combined oral contraceptive pill containing desogestrel 150 micrograms and ethinylestradiol 30 micrograms. It is the generic equivalent of Marvelon, manufactured by Consilient Health. Gedarel 30/150 is commonly prescribed on the NHS as it offers the same formulation as Marvelon at a lower cost. It is taken for 21 days followed by a 7-day pill-free break.

Is Gedarel 30/150 the same as Marvelon?

Yes, Gedarel 30/150 contains exactly the same active ingredients at the same doses as Marvelon and is bioequivalent. They have the same effectiveness, side effects, and contraindications. The only difference is the brand name and price. Your pharmacy may dispense Gedarel 30/150 when Marvelon is prescribed, as they are interchangeable.

How does Gedarel 30/150 differ from Gedarel 20/150?

The difference is the ethinylestradiol dose: Gedarel 30/150 contains 30 mcg (equivalent to Marvelon) while Gedarel 20/150 contains 20 mcg (equivalent to Mercilon). The 30 mcg version generally provides better cycle control with less breakthrough bleeding. The 20 mcg version may suit women sensitive to oestrogen side effects but may cause more spotting.

How do I take Gedarel 30/150?

Take one tablet daily at the same time for 21 days, then have a 7-day pill-free break. Start the next pack after the break. Take tablets as marked on the pack. If starting on day 1 of your period, you have immediate protection.

What are the side effects of Gedarel 30/150?

Side effects are identical to Marvelon: headache, nausea, breast tenderness, mood changes, breakthrough bleeding, and weight changes. The VTE risk is the same as other desogestrel-containing pills. Side effects usually settle within 2–3 months.

How can I get Gedarel 30/150?

Gedarel 30/150 is available on NHS prescription from your GP, contraception clinic, or NowPatient’s online service with home delivery.
