FAQs
Answers to popular questions about Finacea
What is Finacea?
Finacea is a prescription topical gel containing azelaic acid 15%. It is used to treat mild to moderate papulopustular rosacea (rosacea with red bumps and spots) on the face. Finacea is manufactured by LEO Pharma and is applied twice daily. Azelaic acid has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and skin-normalising properties. While primarily licensed for rosacea in the UK, azelaic acid is also used off-label for acne and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
How does Finacea work?
Finacea works through multiple mechanisms. Azelaic acid has direct antibacterial activity against Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis. It has anti-inflammatory properties, reducing the production of reactive oxygen species and inflammatory cytokines. It also normalises the process of keratinisation (skin cell turnover), helping to unblock pores. Additionally, azelaic acid inhibits tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production, which can help reduce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and even out skin tone.
Is Finacea available on the NHS?
Yes, Finacea gel is available on NHS prescription for papulopustular rosacea. It can be prescribed by your GP, dermatologist, or through online services like NowPatient. Azelaic acid is recommended in NICE and BAD guidelines as a first-line topical treatment for mild to moderate rosacea. Lower-strength azelaic acid products (10%) are available over the counter for acne, but the 15% prescription strength is more effective for rosacea.
How do I apply Finacea gel?
Apply a thin layer of Finacea gel to the affected areas of the face twice daily (morning and evening), after washing with a gentle cleanser and drying the skin. Use approximately 0.5 g (about a pea-sized amount) for the entire face. Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes. Wash your hands after application. You may apply sunscreen and makeup once Finacea has dried. In the initial weeks, if irritation occurs, reduce to once daily and gradually increase to twice daily as tolerated.
How long does Finacea take to work?
Improvement in rosacea symptoms is usually noticeable within 4 weeks, but optimal results typically require 8–12 weeks of consistent use. Some patients may experience mild stinging or burning when first starting Finacea, which usually settles within 1–2 weeks. Finacea can be used as a long-term maintenance treatment for rosacea. If no improvement is seen after 12 weeks, consult your prescriber about alternative or additional treatments.
What are the common side effects of Finacea?
Common side effects include burning, stinging, or tingling sensation at the application site, particularly when first starting treatment. These sensations usually subside within 15–20 minutes and improve over the first 1–2 weeks of use. Dryness, scaling, redness, and itching may also occur. Rarely, contact dermatitis or skin lightening at the application site can happen. Using a gentle moisturiser can help manage dryness and irritation. If side effects are severe, reduce application to once daily.
Can I use Finacea during pregnancy?
Azelaic acid is generally considered safe for use in pregnancy and is one of the preferred topical treatments for rosacea and acne during pregnancy. Only minimal amounts are absorbed systemically. However, always consult your doctor or midwife before starting any new medication during pregnancy. Finacea is also considered compatible with breastfeeding, though you should avoid applying it to the breast area.
Can I use Finacea with other rosacea treatments?
Yes, Finacea can be used alongside other rosacea treatments. It is commonly combined with oral antibiotics (such as doxycycline at a low, anti-inflammatory dose) for moderate rosacea. It can be used with metronidazole gel (at different times of day) or ivermectin cream. Avoid using strong exfoliants, retinoids, or alcohol-based products on the same area, as these may increase irritation. Always use a gentle skincare routine and SPF 30+ sunscreen, as sun exposure worsens rosacea.
How can I get a prescription for Finacea?
Finacea is available on NHS prescription from your GP or dermatologist, or through online services like NowPatient. Your prescriber will assess your rosacea subtype and severity to determine the best treatment approach. NowPatient offers convenient online consultations with qualified UK prescribers and home delivery of your medication.
