FAQs

Answers to popular questions about Alverine

What is Alverine?

Alverine citrate is an antispasmodic medication used to relieve painful spasms of the smooth muscle in the gut. It is used for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other conditions involving intestinal cramps and spasms. Alverine is available as 60 mg capsules and is a prescription-only medicine in the UK, marketed under the brand name Spasmonal. It is one of several antispasmodic options recommended in NICE IBS guidance.

How does Alverine work?

Alverine acts as a smooth muscle relaxant that works directly on the muscle of the gastrointestinal tract. It reduces the strength and frequency of contractions in the intestinal wall without affecting normal bowel motility. Unlike some antispasmodics (such as hyoscine), alverine does not have significant anticholinergic effects, which means it is less likely to cause dry mouth, blurred vision, or urinary retention. This makes it better tolerated for many patients.

Is Alverine effective for IBS?

Yes, alverine is one of the antispasmodics recommended by NICE for the treatment of IBS. Clinical studies have shown it is effective at reducing abdominal pain and cramping associated with IBS. It works best for patients whose IBS is characterised by abdominal cramps and spasms. It does not treat all IBS symptoms — bloating, constipation, and diarrhoea may need additional management. Alverine is most effective when used during symptom flares rather than continuously.

What is the usual dose of Alverine?

The usual dose for adults is 60–120 mg (one to two capsules) taken one to three times daily. Take alverine 20–30 minutes before meals for best results. Swallow the capsules whole with water. The maximum daily dose is 360 mg. Your prescriber will advise on the appropriate dose based on the severity of your symptoms. Start at the lower dose and increase if needed.

Can Alverine be taken long-term?

Alverine can be used on an as-needed basis during IBS flare-ups or as a regular treatment for ongoing symptoms. There is no specific maximum treatment duration. NICE IBS guidance suggests reviewing antispasmodic treatment periodically. Many patients use alverine intermittently when symptoms flare rather than continuously. Discuss your long-term treatment plan with your prescriber.

What are the side effects of Alverine?

Alverine is generally well-tolerated. Uncommon side effects include nausea, headache, dizziness, and allergic skin reactions (rash, itching). Because alverine is not anticholinergic, it does not typically cause dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, or urinary retention — side effects common with other antispasmodics. Rarely, allergic reactions including anaphylaxis have been reported. If you develop a rash or swelling, stop alverine and seek medical advice.

Can I take Alverine during pregnancy?

There is limited data on alverine use in pregnancy. It is generally advised to avoid alverine during pregnancy unless the benefit outweighs the risk. If you need antispasmodic treatment for IBS during pregnancy, discuss alternatives with your doctor or midwife. Peppermint oil capsules are sometimes considered as a non-prescription alternative.

How can I get Alverine?

Alverine requires a prescription from your GP or through online services like NowPatient. Your prescriber will assess your IBS symptoms and may recommend alverine alongside dietary and lifestyle modifications. NowPatient provides online consultations and home delivery.
