FAQs
Answers to popular questions about Nuvaring
What is NuvaRing?
NuvaRing is a combined hormonal contraceptive vaginal ring containing etonogestrel 11.7 mg and ethinylestradiol 2.7 mg. It is a flexible, transparent plastic ring approximately 54 mm in diameter that is inserted into the vagina and left in place for 3 weeks, releasing a low, steady dose of hormones. After 3 weeks, the ring is removed for a 7-day ring-free break during which a withdrawal bleed usually occurs. NuvaRing is manufactured by Organon and is a prescription-only medicine in the UK.
How does NuvaRing work?
NuvaRing works in the same way as the combined oral contraceptive pill but delivers hormones vaginally rather than orally. The steady release of etonogestrel (a progestogen) and ethinylestradiol (an oestrogen) suppresses ovulation, thickens the cervical mucus to prevent sperm reaching the egg, and thins the endometrium to reduce the likelihood of implantation. The vaginal route provides more consistent hormone levels with fewer peaks and troughs compared to daily pill-taking.
How effective is NuvaRing?
NuvaRing is over 99% effective when used perfectly (fewer than 1 pregnancy per 100 women per year). With typical use (accounting for occasional errors), effectiveness is approximately 91% (about 9 pregnancies per 100 women per year). Effectiveness is reduced by factors that dislodge the ring, interactions with certain medications, or incorrect timing of insertion and removal. NuvaRing does not require daily action, which may improve adherence compared to the pill.
How do I insert and remove NuvaRing?
To insert: wash your hands, squeeze the ring between your thumb and index finger, and insert it into the vagina (similar to inserting a tampon). The exact position is not critical — it should feel comfortable. To remove after 3 weeks: hook your finger under the ring and gently pull it out. The ring is then discarded in its resealable foil sachet (not flushed down the toilet). After a 7-day ring-free break, insert a new ring. The ring should stay in place during daily activities, exercise, and sexual intercourse.
What if NuvaRing falls out?
If the ring has been out for less than 3 hours, rinse it in cool or lukewarm water (not hot) and reinsert it. Contraceptive protection is maintained. If the ring has been out for more than 3 hours and you are in weeks 1 or 2 of use, reinsert it and use condoms for the next 7 days. If you are in week 3, either insert a new ring immediately (skipping the ring-free break) or have the ring-free break now and insert a new ring after 7 days. If in doubt, use condoms and seek advice from your prescriber.
What are the side effects of NuvaRing?
Common side effects include headache, vaginal discomfort or discharge, mood changes, nausea, breast tenderness, weight changes, and reduced libido. Ring-specific side effects include a sensation of the ring during intercourse (reported by some partners) and occasional ring expulsion. The risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is similar to that of combined pills containing desogestrel. Breakthrough bleeding may occur in the first few months.
Can my partner feel NuvaRing during sex?
Some partners may feel the ring during intercourse, but most report it does not cause discomfort. If desired, NuvaRing can be temporarily removed for up to 3 hours without loss of contraceptive protection. This is sufficient for sexual intercourse. If removed, rinse and reinsert as soon as possible. Do not leave the ring out for more than 3 hours.
Who should not use NuvaRing?
NuvaRing has the same contraindications as combined oral contraceptives. It should not be used by women with a history of VTE, arterial thrombosis, or stroke, those with migraine with aura, uncontrolled hypertension, breast cancer, severe liver disease, or smokers aged over 35. Women with a BMI over 35 or those with certain inherited clotting disorders should also avoid it. Your prescriber will assess your eligibility using WHO MEC criteria.
How can I get NuvaRing?
You can request NuvaRing through NowPatient by completing a short online consultation with one of our prescribing clinicians. Your clinician will review your medical history, blood pressure and BMI to check that NuvaRing is a safe choice of contraception for you. If treatment is suitable, a prescription is issued and your medication is dispensed by our registered pharmacy and delivered to your door.
