FAQs

Answers to popular questions about Colofac

What is Colofac?

Colofac is the brand name for mebeverine hydrochloride, an antispasmodic medication used to treat the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other conditions involving gut spasms. It is available as Colofac 135 mg tablets and Colofac MR 200 mg (modified-release) capsules. Colofac IBS (135 mg) is available over the counter from pharmacies for adults aged 18 and over with a confirmed diagnosis of IBS. Higher-dose and modified-release formulations require a prescription.

How does Colofac work?

Mebeverine works directly on the smooth muscle of the gut, reducing spasms and relaxing the intestinal wall. It has a direct musculotropic action, meaning it acts on the muscle cells themselves rather than through the nervous system. This makes it different from anticholinergic antispasmodics. Mebeverine helps relieve the cramping, pain, and bloating associated with IBS without affecting normal gut motility or causing the anticholinergic side effects (dry mouth, blurred vision) associated with some other antispasmodics.

How do I take Colofac?

For Colofac 135 mg tablets: take one tablet three times daily, approximately 20 minutes before meals. Swallow whole with water. For Colofac MR 200 mg capsules: take one capsule twice daily, 20 minutes before the two main meals of the day. Do not chew or crush MR capsules. Taking Colofac before meals helps it work when the gut is most active. Continue treatment for as long as symptoms persist.

How long does Colofac take to work?

Some patients notice improvement within a few days of starting Colofac, but it may take 2–4 weeks of regular use for the full benefit. If there is no improvement after 2 weeks of consistent use, consult your doctor. For best results, take Colofac regularly before meals rather than only when symptoms occur. Dietary modifications alongside Colofac often improve outcomes.

What are the side effects of Colofac?

Colofac has an excellent safety profile and side effects are rare. Occasional side effects include allergic skin reactions (rash, urticaria), and very rarely angioedema. Unlike anticholinergic antispasmodics, mebeverine does not cause dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, or urinary retention. It does not cause drowsiness and does not affect driving ability. This favourable side effect profile makes it one of the most commonly recommended antispasmodics for IBS.

Can I take Colofac during pregnancy?

There is limited clinical data on mebeverine in pregnancy. It is generally avoided during pregnancy unless the prescriber considers the benefit outweighs the risk. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, discuss IBS management options with your doctor. Dietary and lifestyle changes are preferred first-line approaches for IBS during pregnancy.

Can I take Colofac with other IBS treatments?

Yes, Colofac can be used alongside other IBS treatments including fibre supplements (such as ispaghula husk), peppermint oil capsules, loperamide (for diarrhoea-predominant IBS), laxatives (for constipation-predominant IBS), and low-dose antidepressants prescribed for IBS pain. It can also be used alongside the low-FODMAP diet. Discuss a comprehensive management plan with your doctor.

How can I get Colofac?

You can request Colofac through NowPatient by completing a short online consultation with one of our prescribing clinicians. Your clinician will review your IBS symptoms and check for any symptoms that need further investigation before deciding whether Colofac is suitable for you. If treatment is suitable, a prescription is issued and your medication is dispensed by our registered pharmacy and delivered to your door.
