FAQs

Answers to popular questions about Avomine

What is Avomine?

Avomine is a brand-name medication containing promethazine teoclate 25 mg. It is an antihistamine used primarily for the prevention and treatment of motion sickness (travel sickness) and nausea. Avomine belongs to the phenothiazine class of antihistamines and works by blocking histamine H1 receptors and muscarinic receptors in the brain’s vomiting centre. It is available over the counter in the UK from pharmacies and can also be obtained on prescription. Avomine is suitable for adults and children aged 5 years and over.

What is the difference between Avomine and Phenergan?

Both Avomine and Phenergan contain forms of promethazine, but they use different salts. Avomine contains promethazine teoclate, which is specifically formulated for motion sickness and has a longer duration of action (up to 24 hours). Phenergan contains promethazine hydrochloride, which has a wider range of uses including allergies, sleep, and general nausea. For travel sickness specifically, Avomine (promethazine teoclate) is generally preferred as it provides longer-lasting protection with a single dose taken the night before or 1–2 hours before travel.

How does Avomine work?

Avomine works by blocking histamine H1 receptors and muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the vomiting centre and vestibular system of the brain. Motion sickness occurs when the brain receives conflicting signals from the eyes, inner ears, and body about movement and position. By blocking these receptors, Avomine reduces the sensitivity of the balance organs in the inner ear and suppresses the brain’s nausea and vomiting response. It also has a sedative effect, which can be beneficial during long journeys.

How should I take Avomine for travel sickness?

For preventing travel sickness, take one Avomine 25 mg tablet the night before a long journey, or 1–2 hours before a shorter journey. If the journey lasts longer than 24 hours, you can take another tablet at bedtime. For treatment of motion sickness that has already started, take one 25 mg tablet as soon as possible, then another at bedtime if needed. The maximum dose for adults is 75 mg in 24 hours. Avomine tablets should be swallowed whole with water.

What is the dose of Avomine for children?

Avomine is suitable for children aged 5–10 years at a dose of half a 25 mg tablet (12.5 mg) the night before travel or 1–2 hours before the journey. Children aged 10 years and over can take the adult dose of one 25 mg tablet. Avomine should not be given to children under 5 years of age. Always follow the dose instructions provided with the medication. If you are unsure about the correct dose for your child, ask a pharmacist or doctor.

Can I take Avomine on an empty stomach?

Yes, Avomine can be taken with or without food. However, if you experience stomach discomfort, taking it with a light snack or a glass of milk may help. For motion sickness prevention, the most important factor is timing rather than food — take the tablet well in advance of travel (ideally the night before for long journeys) to allow the medication to reach effective levels before exposure to motion.

What are the common side effects of Avomine?

The most common side effect of Avomine is drowsiness, which can be significant and may persist into the following day. Other common side effects include dry mouth, blurred vision, dizziness, headache, and difficulty concentrating. Less common side effects include constipation, urinary retention, and skin reactions. In children, paradoxical excitation (restlessness and agitation rather than drowsiness) can occasionally occur. The sedative effect may be considered a benefit for long journeys but can impair driving and concentration.

Will Avomine make me drowsy?

Yes, drowsiness is the most common side effect of Avomine and is often quite pronounced. It is a sedating antihistamine. You should not drive, operate heavy machinery, or perform activities requiring mental alertness until you know how Avomine affects you. The drowsiness may last for several hours and can persist into the following day. Avoid combining Avomine with alcohol or other sedating medications, as this significantly increases drowsiness. For some people, the sedation is a welcome side effect on long flights or journeys.

What medications interact with Avomine?

Avomine can interact with several medications. CNS depressants including alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, and other sedating antihistamines increase the risk of excessive drowsiness. Anticholinergic medications (such as tricyclic antidepressants, hyoscine) may enhance side effects like dry mouth and blurred vision. Avomine may mask the warning signs of ototoxicity from aminoglycoside antibiotics. It may also interfere with pregnancy testing and allergy skin prick tests. Inform your pharmacist or prescriber of all current medications.

Is Avomine safe during pregnancy?

Promethazine (the active ingredient in Avomine) has been widely used in pregnancy and is generally considered to have a reassuring safety profile. It is sometimes used to manage hyperemesis gravidarum (severe pregnancy sickness). However, it should only be used in pregnancy when advised by a doctor, and the lowest effective dose should be taken for the shortest time needed. Avomine should be avoided near the end of pregnancy as it may cause sedation or other effects in the newborn. Speak to your doctor or midwife before using Avomine if you are pregnant.
