FAQs

Answers to popular questions about Tamiflu

What is Tamiflu?

Tamiflu is a brand-name antiviral medication containing oseltamivir phosphate. It is used for the treatment and prevention of influenza (flu) types A and B. Tamiflu is available as capsules (30 mg, 45 mg, 75 mg) and as an oral suspension. It is a prescription-only medicine in the UK. Tamiflu is most effective when started within 48 hours of flu symptom onset and can reduce the duration of illness by approximately 1–2 days. It is also used as post-exposure prophylaxis during flu outbreaks.

How does Tamiflu work?

Tamiflu (oseltamivir) is a neuraminidase inhibitor. Neuraminidase is an enzyme on the surface of influenza virus particles that is essential for the release of newly formed viral particles from infected cells. By inhibiting neuraminidase, oseltamivir prevents new virus particles from spreading to infect other cells, limiting viral replication and spread within the body. This reduces the severity and duration of flu symptoms and can reduce the risk of complications.

Who should take Tamiflu?

Tamiflu is recommended for the treatment of influenza in patients at risk of complications, including people aged 65 and over, those with chronic respiratory, cardiac, kidney, liver, or neurological conditions, immunocompromised patients, pregnant women, and those with a BMI of 40 or more. NICE recommends that Tamiflu should be used when influenza is circulating in the community and the patient is at risk of complications. For otherwise healthy adults, flu usually resolves without antiviral treatment.

What is the usual dose of Tamiflu?

For treatment of influenza in adults and children over 40 kg: 75 mg twice daily for 5 days. For prevention (prophylaxis) after close contact with a confirmed case: 75 mg once daily for 10 days (or up to 6 weeks during community outbreaks). Children’s doses are weight-based. Treatment should begin within 48 hours of symptom onset for maximum effectiveness. Tamiflu can be taken with or without food, though taking it with food may reduce nausea.

Does Tamiflu work after 48 hours?

Tamiflu is most effective when started within 48 hours of symptom onset. After 48 hours, the benefit is reduced. However, for hospitalised patients, those with severe flu, and high-risk individuals, treatment may still be considered beyond 48 hours as there may be some residual benefit. Public Health England guidance supports treatment initiation beyond 48 hours in severe or complicated influenza.

What are the side effects of Tamiflu?

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, headache, and abdominal pain. Taking Tamiflu with food can reduce nausea. Diarrhoea and dizziness are reported occasionally. Rare neuropsychiatric events (abnormal behaviour, confusion, hallucinations) have been reported, particularly in children and adolescents — parents should monitor for unusual behaviour. The overall side effect profile is generally mild and the medication is well-tolerated.

Can I take Tamiflu during pregnancy?

Yes, Tamiflu is recommended for the treatment and prevention of influenza in pregnant women. Pregnant women are at higher risk of severe influenza complications and hospitalisation. UK guidelines (PHE, RCOG) recommend that antiviral treatment should not be delayed in pregnant women with suspected influenza. The benefits of treatment clearly outweigh the risks. Tamiflu has been used extensively in pregnant women with reassuring safety data.

How can I get Tamiflu?

Tamiflu requires a prescription from your GP, an out-of-hours service, or an online prescriber like NowPatient. During flu season, some pharmacies may supply Tamiflu under Patient Group Directions. Generic oseltamivir is also available and is equivalent to Tamiflu. NowPatient offers online consultations for convenient access to flu treatment.
