FAQs

Answers to popular questions about Norgeston

What is Norgeston?

Norgeston is a progestogen-only pill (POP) containing levonorgestrel 30 micrograms. Like Noriday, it is a traditional POP that must be taken within a strict 3-hour window each day. Norgeston contains no oestrogen and is suitable for women who cannot take combined pills. It is taken continuously without any pill-free breaks. Norgeston is manufactured by Bayer.

How does Norgeston differ from Noriday?

Both are traditional progestogen-only pills with a 3-hour dosing window, but they contain different progestogens: Norgeston contains levonorgestrel 30 mcg, while Noriday contains norethisterone 350 mcg. Both work primarily by thickening cervical mucus rather than consistently suppressing ovulation. Their effectiveness and side effect profiles are similar. The choice between them is often based on individual tolerability and prescriber preference.

How effective is Norgeston?

With perfect use (taken at the same time every day within the 3-hour window), Norgeston is approximately 99% effective. With typical use, effectiveness is around 91%. The strict timing requirement is the main limitation compared to desogestrel-based POPs, which have a 12-hour window.

How do I take Norgeston?

Take one tablet daily at the same time, continuously without any break. Start the next pack immediately after finishing the current one. You must take Norgeston within 3 hours of your chosen time each day. Set a daily reminder. Your periods may become irregular, lighter, more frequent, or stop altogether — these changes are normal on the POP.

What if I miss a Norgeston pill?

If you are more than 3 hours late taking Norgeston, contraceptive protection is reduced. Take the missed pill immediately, continue with the next pill at the usual time, and use additional contraception for 48 hours. If you had unprotected sex during the unprotected period, seek advice about emergency contraception.

What are the side effects of Norgeston?

Common side effects include irregular bleeding, spotting, headaches, breast tenderness, mood changes, and acne. Some women experience no periods at all, which is harmless. Nausea and changes in libido may occur. Progestogen-only pills do not increase VTE risk and are not associated with the cardiovascular risks of combined pills. Functional ovarian cysts may develop but usually resolve without treatment.

Can I use Norgeston while breastfeeding?

Yes, Norgeston is safe for breastfeeding mothers. Progestogen-only pills do not affect milk supply or composition. It can be started from day 21 postpartum with immediate contraceptive effect if started on or before this date.

How can I get Norgeston?

Norgeston is available on NHS prescription from your GP, sexual health clinic, or through online services like NowPatient. If the 3-hour window is inconvenient, your prescriber may recommend switching to a desogestrel POP with a 12-hour window.
