FAQs
Answers to popular questions about Tamsulosin
What is Tamsulosin?
Tamsulosin is a selective alpha-1A adrenoreceptor blocker used primarily for the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men. It is available as 400 microgram modified-release capsules and is one of the most commonly prescribed medications for prostate-related urinary symptoms in the UK. Common brand names include Flomax and Flomaxtra. Tamsulosin is available as a pharmacy medicine (without prescription) from pharmacies for men aged 45–75 with symptoms of BPH, or on NHS prescription.
How does Tamsulosin work?
Tamsulosin works by selectively blocking alpha-1A adrenoreceptors in the smooth muscle of the prostate gland and bladder neck. This relaxes the muscle tissue, reducing the constriction of the urethra caused by an enlarged prostate. The result is improved urine flow, reduced urgency, and fewer episodes of incomplete bladder emptying. The alpha-1A selectivity means tamsulosin has less effect on blood vessel smooth muscle compared to older alpha-blockers, resulting in fewer cardiovascular side effects such as dizziness and postural hypotension.
What symptoms does Tamsulosin help with?
Tamsulosin helps relieve lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) associated with BPH, including weak or intermittent urine stream, difficulty starting urination (hesitancy), frequent urination especially at night (nocturia), urgency, sensation of incomplete bladder emptying, and post-void dribbling. Symptom improvement typically begins within 1–2 weeks of starting treatment, with maximum benefit seen after 4–6 weeks.
How do I take Tamsulosin?
Take one tamsulosin 400 microgram modified-release capsule once daily, approximately 30 minutes after the same meal each day (usually after breakfast or the first meal of the day). Swallow the capsule whole — do not crush, chew, or open it, as this destroys the modified-release mechanism. Taking it after food improves absorption and reduces the risk of dizziness. If you miss a dose, take it the same day after food; if the entire day has passed, skip the missed dose.
How long do I need to take Tamsulosin?
Tamsulosin is usually taken as a long-term treatment since BPH is a chronic condition. Stopping tamsulosin will likely lead to a return of urinary symptoms within days to weeks. Your GP should review your treatment periodically to assess ongoing benefit. If symptoms are not adequately controlled, your prescriber may add a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (such as finasteride) or consider referral for surgical options.
What are the side effects of Tamsulosin?
Common side effects include dizziness (especially when standing up quickly), headache, abnormal ejaculation (retrograde ejaculation, where semen enters the bladder instead of being expelled — this is harmless but may affect fertility), nasal congestion, and rhinitis. Uncommon side effects include postural hypotension (low blood pressure on standing), palpitations, nausea, constipation, and diarrhoea. A rare but important side effect is intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS) during cataract surgery — inform your eye surgeon if you are taking or have ever taken tamsulosin.
Can I buy Tamsulosin without a prescription?
Yes, tamsulosin 400 microgram capsules are available as a pharmacy medicine (Flomax Relief) from pharmacies without prescription for men aged 45–75 with symptoms suggestive of BPH. The pharmacist will ask screening questions to check suitability. A maximum 6-week supply is available without prescription, after which you should see your GP for ongoing management. Tamsulosin is also available on NHS prescription.
How can I get Tamsulosin?
Tamsulosin is available from pharmacies without prescription (Flomax Relief) or on NHS prescription from your GP. For ongoing treatment, an NHS prescription is usually more cost-effective. Online services like NowPatient can also provide prescriptions following an online consultation with a qualified prescriber.
