FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Nicorette Original 2mg Medicated Chewing Gum for Quitting Smoking

What is Nicorette Gum and how does it help you quit smoking?

Nicorette Medicated Chewing Gum is a nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) that releases nicotine as you chew, which is then absorbed through the lining of the mouth. It is available in 2 mg and 4 mg strengths and multiple flavours including Freshmint, Fruitfusion, Icy White, and Original. The 2 mg gum is for smokers who smoke fewer than 20 cigarettes per day, while the 4 mg is for those smoking 20 or more daily. Available through the NHS Quit Smoking service.

How do I use Nicorette Gum correctly?

Use the ‘chew and park’ technique: chew the gum slowly until you notice a peppery or tingling taste, then park it between your cheek and gum to allow nicotine absorption. When the taste fades, chew again and repeat. Each piece should be chewed for about 30 minutes. Use 8–12 pieces per day (maximum 15). Do not eat or drink (especially acidic drinks like coffee, juice, or fizzy drinks) for 15 minutes before and during use, as this reduces nicotine absorption. Use for up to 12 weeks, then gradually reduce.

Can I get Nicorette Gum through the NHS Quit Smoking service?

Yes, all Nicorette Medicated Chewing Gum varieties (2 mg and 4 mg, all flavours) are available through the NHS Quit Smoking service at community pharmacies. Your pharmacist will recommend the appropriate strength and set up a structured quit plan.

What are the side effects of Nicorette Gum?

Common side effects include jaw ache (from chewing), hiccups, nausea, mouth/throat irritation, and indigestion. Chewing too vigorously releases nicotine too quickly, causing nausea and hiccups — use the slow ‘chew and park’ method. These side effects are generally mild and decrease with correct technique.

Can I use Nicorette Gum with nicotine patches?

Yes, combining nicotine gum with patches is a recommended and effective strategy. The patch provides continuous background nicotine, while the gum offers on-demand relief for breakthrough cravings. Your pharmacist can set up this combination through the NHS Quit Smoking service.

  • NowPatient is worth your time!

I do not leave reviews, due to time and a rare condition I have. I initially left a message, my call was returned within 2 hours or less. NowPatient offers 4 discount programs. I worked with Jay, he was genuine and wanted to help me all while giving me amazing customer service. Even though I didn't qualify, he gave me some suggestions and tips while encouraging me to follow up with the manufacturer along with other things I could do. This is the real deal, not a scam, and not a waste of your time. Amazing!! Thank you, Jay!

  • Excellent service

Cannot speak highly enough of the service and assistance I have received from NowPatient. I was dealing with a very kind and helpful clinician who couldn't do enough to assist. He was knowledgeable about the medication being prescribed and the consultation was thorough. There were some hurdles to overcome to receive the medication overseas and nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommend.
