Can an untreated bacterial sinus infection cause long-term issues?

If left untreated or not properly managed, a bacterial sinus infection can lead to a cycle of recurrent infections and ongoing sinus blockage. This chronic inflammation and blockage can also contribute to the development of nasal polyps, which are noncancerous growths on the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses. Nasal polyps can cause complications, including obstruction of airflow and fluid drainage, worsening of asthma symptoms, obstructive sleep apnea, and an increased susceptibility to future sinus infections.

Treating a bacterial sinus infection promptly and effectively can help break this cycle and prevent long-term issues. Medication and surgery may be necessary in some cases to address chronic inflammation and remove nasal polyps.

How can I determine if I have a tooth infection or a sinus infection?

Differentiating between a tooth infection and a sinus infection can be challenging, as the symptoms can overlap. However, some key differences can help distinguish between the two. The location and progression of pain can provide valuable clues.

If the initial symptoms started near the eyes and then moved down the face, causing pain and pressure on the forehead and between the eyes, it is more likely to be a sinus infection. On the other hand, if the first symptoms were teeth sensitivity or pain in the middle of the cheeks near the nostrils, and the pain then moved up toward the eyes, a tooth-related issue is more probable.

It’s important to consult with a dentist or primary care provider for an evaluation if you suspect a tooth infection or sinus infection. Imaging studies, such as X-rays, may be necessary to determine the precise location of the infection.

Can sinus problems cause eye bags or puffiness?

Sinus problems, including sinusitis, typically do not cause pronounced eye bags or puffiness. Eye bags are more commonly associated with issues related to the structure of the eye itself, such as weakened muscles and stretched eyelids that result from ageing. Allergies can cause eye puffiness, but they are not directly related to sinus problems. If you experience persistent eye bags or puffiness, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider for a proper evaluation and potential treatment options.
