FAQs

Answers to popular questions about Almotriptan

What is Almotriptan?

Almotriptan is a triptan medication used for the acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura in adults. It is a selective serotonin (5-HT1B/1D) receptor agonist that relieves migraine headache, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. Almotriptan is available as 12.5 mg tablets and is a prescription-only medicine in the UK. It is one of seven triptans available in the UK and is known for its good tolerability profile and rapid onset of action.

How does Almotriptan work?

Almotriptan works by stimulating serotonin 5-HT1B/1D receptors in the blood vessels of the brain. During a migraine, cranial blood vessels dilate and become inflamed. Almotriptan causes vasoconstriction (narrowing) of these dilated blood vessels, reduces the release of inflammatory neuropeptides (such as CGRP), and inhibits pain transmission in the trigeminal nerve system. This addresses the underlying pathology of migraine rather than simply masking the pain.

How is Almotriptan different from other triptans?

Almotriptan is one of the better-tolerated triptans with a side effect profile closest to placebo in clinical trials. It has a rapid onset of action (within 30–60 minutes) and good 2-hour headache relief rates (approximately 60–70%). Compared to sumatriptan (the most prescribed triptan), almotriptan may cause fewer chest symptoms and overall side effects. Each triptan has a slightly different pharmacological profile, and if one triptan does not work, another may be effective.

How do I take Almotriptan?

Take one Almotriptan 12.5 mg tablet as soon as a migraine headache begins, with water. If the migraine returns after initial relief, a second dose may be taken, but not sooner than 2 hours after the first dose. The maximum dose in 24 hours is 25 mg (2 tablets). Almotriptan can be taken with or without food. It is intended for the acute treatment of migraine attacks only — do not take it to try to prevent migraines. If the first dose provides no relief at all, do not take a second dose for the same attack.

Should I take Almotriptan during the aura?

It is generally recommended to take triptans during the headache phase of a migraine rather than during the aura phase. Taking a triptan during the aura may be less effective and the headache may still develop. Wait until the headache begins, then take Almotriptan as early as possible for best results. Some patients find it helpful to take a simple analgesic during the aura and reserve the triptan for the headache phase.

What are the side effects of Almotriptan?

Almotriptan is one of the best-tolerated triptans. Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, and fatigue. Triptan sensations such as tingling, warmth, heaviness, tightness or pressure in the chest, throat, or limbs are possible but less common than with some other triptans. These symptoms are usually mild and transient. If chest tightness is severe or persistent, seek medical attention to exclude cardiac causes.

Who should not take Almotriptan?

Almotriptan should not be taken by people with ischaemic heart disease, coronary artery vasospasm (Prinzmetal’s angina), peripheral vascular disease, a history of stroke or TIA, uncontrolled hypertension, or severe hepatic impairment. It should not be used within 24 hours of another triptan or an ergotamine preparation. It should not be used concurrently with MAO inhibitors. Triptans are not recommended for hemiplegic or basilar migraine.

Can I take Almotriptan with other painkillers?

Yes, almotriptan can be taken alongside simple analgesics such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, or aspirin. Combining a triptan with an NSAID can improve response rates. Almotriptan should not be taken with other triptans or ergotamine-containing medications within 24 hours. Avoid excessive use of almotriptan (more than 10 days per month) to prevent medication-overuse headache.

How can I get Almotriptan?

Almotriptan requires a prescription from your GP, neurologist, or online prescriber such as NowPatient. Your prescriber will confirm your diagnosis of migraine and assess your cardiovascular risk. NowPatient offers convenient online consultations for migraine sufferers.
